The 65th Hunger Games took place 9 years prior to the start of the series. These Games were won by Career Tribute Finnick Odair of District 4 when he was fourteen years old, making him one of the youngest tributes to have ever won a Hunger Games. Finnick seemed to step off the metal plate faster than anyone else and grabbed spears and knives at the Cornucopia. During the times the other tributes were fighting he learned how to use his weapons well.
Finnick reportedly won the Games by having great sponsors support due to his good looks and skills that the other tributes didn't have. He was mentored by Mags. Since the main industry of his district is fishing, Finnick could use a trident very well. He received one as a sponsor gift, which Katniss Everdeen claimed in Catching Fire was the most expensive sponsor gift she had ever seen.
Finnick, due to his good looks and great skills as a fighter, was given a trident as a sponsor gift. Supposedly, he was so good with the trident that it was stated it was "practically an extension to his arm." Finnick was able to create nets out of vines and used them to catch the other tributes so he could spear them with his trident. He made alliances and killed the rest of his fellow Careers with the trident he received from sponsors. In a matter of days, he was crowned the victor of the 65th Hunger Games.
