The Cornucopia bloodbath is an event that has always occurred at the very beginning of every Hunger Games since they began, as most of the tributes compete for valuable weapons, food, water and packs full of other valuable supplies that could be useful during the games. These supplies are spread in and around the Cornucopia.
Tributes always die at the bloodbath. The Gamemakers or the Capitol probably set up the Cornucopia for optimal entertainment value and quick deaths at the beginning of the game to keep audiences interested. In the end, the Cornucopia is often taken over by a group of tributes who fought in the bloodbath, usually this is the pack of Career Tributes.
The Cornucopia is usually located in the center of the arena and is where the Career Tributes normally set up camp during the majority of the games, as many tributes would attempt to return to scavenge what is left of the supplies there. The area around the Cornucopia varies between games, such as being surrounded by forests like in the 74th Hunger Games or surrounded by seawater like in the 75th Hunger Games.
There are a variety of ways tributes will approach the bloodbath, but these strategies depend on how the Cornucopia has been positioned.
Some tributes ignore the Cornucopia completely and try to put as much distance as they can between themselves and the tributes with weapons from the Cornucopia. This means they will get little or no supplies at all and will have to rely on the arena and their skills or perhaps a rich sponsor to give them some. In the 74th Hunger Games, Peeta Mellark avoided the Cornucopia at first under Haymitch's orders, but later joined the Career Tributes and had access to their supplies until he betrayed them. Other tributes, including Katniss Everdeen, grab what they can from the outskirts of the Cornucopia and flee before things get too dangerous. This means they still get supplies, but are not very valuable and have little or no weapons. Other tributes, mostly the Careers, dash for supplies as an opportunity to kill as many as possible while they are all together. This means they will get the most weapons and supplies, but they also run the highest risk of getting killed or badly injured. Some tributes are agile and can reach the inside of the cornucopia to swiftly gather supplies and leave or stay, like Thresh.
74th Hunger Games
In the novel and film, Katniss Everdeen was taken to a launch station, where her stylist, Cinna, was waiting. He put on her arena jacket and gave her the Mockingjay pin for good luck. The timer gave them 60 seconds to say their goodbyes. After kissing her, Katniss walked inside the tube, and it closed, beginning to lift her up into the arena. Cinna nodded to her as the ascended her into the arena.
In the film, as she ascended, light blinded her view for a few moments. When she could finally see clearly, she looked toward the silver horn-shaped Cornucopia and its supplies. Before the 50 seconds prior to the game's commence counted down, she turned her head to see the other tributes besides her. At 10 seconds, she spotted a bow and quiver of arrows and turned toward Peeta Mellark, her district partner, who noticed her idea and gestured with his head a no, before facing the Cornucopia again. Loud horns signaled the games.

75th Hunger Games
In the novel, Katniss described the scene as quick and similar to the 74th Hunger Games. But when she walked into the tube and was elevated into the arena, peacekeepers came in and beated up Cinna. Katniss cried and screamed, as he was dragged away, leaving a trail of blood.
In the film, the scene was similar, but when she was ascending, she was crouching down to try and stop the elevator to save Cinna as he was dragged away, without leaving a blood trail. Once again light blinded her view, before she could see the Cornucopia, which was surrounded by seawater this time. The countdown begin at 10. Katniss was angry after seeing Cinna get killed and when the games began with a gunshot, she determinedly dived into the water.
50th Hunger Games
In the 50th Hunger Games, 18 people were killed in the opening bloodbath, most of them likely by the Careers. However, the arena was so beautiful, the tributes were awed at first sight. Haymitch Abernathy, the victor from District 12, managed to get supplies before the bloodbath began, being the only one not stunned by the beauty of the arena.
74th Hunger Games
In the novel version of the 74th Hunger Games, ten people were killed in the opening bloodbath. In the film version of the 74th Hunger Games, eleven people were killed instead as the District 4 tributes were not considered careers and the District 4 girl was killed off.
In the novel, Katniss grappled with the District 9 boy over an orange backpack, until the boy began coughing blood in her face and finally fell onto the ground dead with a knife protruding out of his back. Katniss looked to see the District 2 girl, Clove, with a knife in her hands, indicating she had done the deed. Clove threw a knife right toward Katniss's head, almost killing her. However, Katniss shielded herself with her backpack, gaining herself a knife, before running off into the forests.
In the film, Katniss ran toward Peeta, but he had ran off swiftly into the forests surrounding them, forcing her to stop and watch the bloodbath unfold. As she spotted the District 4 girl running and grabbing a backpack off the ground, Katniss targeted an orange one for herself and ran to retrieve it. Right after she reached and grabbed it, the District 7 boy began to chase her, wielding an axe. Katniss then tripped onto the ground and raised her backpack to sheild herself as the District 7 boy raised his weapon to kill her. However, he falls onto the ground besides her, with a knife protruding out of his back. Katniss turned to see Clove, with a knife in her hands, revealing to have done the deed, as the career tribute threw a knife towards her head. Nevertheless, Katniss shielded herself with her backpack, and when she saw Clove start off for her, she ran off into the forests with a knife.
Casualties: In the novel, the only described death was the District 9 boy's, who was stabbed by a knife thrown by the District 2 girl, Clove. At night, the portraits shown are the District 3 girl, District 4 boy (which surprised Katniss as he was a career), District 5 boy, both from District 6, both from District 7, District 8 boy, both from District 9, and District 10 girl. In the film, several tributes are seen being killed and injured. Clove's only described kill was the death of the District 7 boy, who she stabbed with a throwing knife. Glimmer, the District 1 girl, grabbed the District 6 girl and dragged her by the hair into obstacles. She then pulls her onto the ground and grapples with her over a yellow duffel bag. When she gets tired, she effectively punched the girl brutally in the face, knocking her out. She then proceeded to stab her to death with a knife. Marvel, the District 1 boy, grabbed the District 8 boy's armed wrists before the boy could stab him. He then shoved him onto the ground and took his kukri knife and used it to slash the boy to death. He then interrupted the District 3 boy and District 7 girl's grapple over a black backpack and knocked the girl onto the floor. He then chased her with a spear pointed to her heart as she crawled away, before skewering her. Cato, the District 2 boy, pinned the District 6 boy to the ground and punched him, but didn't kill him as he did not have any weapons. He then retrieved a machete and used it to pound the District 10 boy in the chest, killing him. The District 4 girl confronted him and swung a sword at his head, but he ducked, knocked the sword out of her hands, pounded her in the abdomen, and threw her into a crate. He then goes to the entrance of the Cornucopia and is confronted by the District 5 boy, who he slashes and shoves into a crate, killing him; he is also confronted by the District 7 boy, who he shoves out of his way. When he entered, the District 4 boy tried to run away, but he slashed his throat open, knocking him into a crate and effectively killing him. After entering and seeing the District 6 boy try to kill Glimmer, he shoves the boy away and grabs his armed wrists when he tries to stab. He then uses a long handled sickle to trip and slam the District 6 boy onto the ground, before stabbing him once more, killing him. Non-careers are also shown injuring and killing. The District 3 boy stole an axe from the District 7 girl. The girl then tried to take his backpack but was shoved back. The District 4 girl slashed the District 3 girl's leg with a sword. The District 5 boy tripped the District 3 girl and slashed her neck with a sickle, killing her. The District 7 boy knocked down the District 5 boy with a spear. However, he gets distracted by Thresh, the District 11 boy. The District 7 boy jabbed and swung his spear, but Thresh dodged and knocked it away, before using his sickle sword to knock him away, unintentionally slashing his throat killing him. At night, the portraits of the District 9 boy and District 10 girl are missing completely.

75th Hunger Games
In the 75th Hunger Games, eight people were killed in the opening bloodbath. Unlike the previous games, the only things held in the Cornucopia were weapons.
In the novel, Katniss swam quickly to the Cornucopia. She acquired a bow and arrow and readied it as she heard someone behind her. She sees Finnick Odair, who yelled for her to duck and uses a trident to spear the District 5 male, who had approached Katniss from behind. He showed her a golden bracelet, giving to him by Haymitch, to symbolize their alliance. The two realize there are only weapons and no food or survival supplies. Career tributes arrive at the Cornucopia, but are driven off by them. Katniss shoots Gloss's calf when he attempted to dive into the water for safety when he was too slow. She also attempted to shoot Enobaria, but she dives into the water faster. As Brutus approaches, she attempted to shoot him in the liver, but he used his tribute belt to stop it. After realizing Peeta is stuck on his podium and cannot swim, Katniss readies to go retreive him, but Finnick offered to. He swam and retrieved him, along with his district partner Mags. The four of them team up and collect supplies, but are forced to leave before the career tributes could come back. Also, it is mentioned by Johanna Mason that Beetee was stabbed in the Cornucopia before she went to retrieve him.
In the film, Katniss is coming up into the arena. She is distraught about what happened to Cinna. AS she is in the arena, she takes a look around. She finds Cashmere next to her, she appears to be looking around as well. Katniss turns frantically looking for Peeta, but is nowhere to be seen, she then thinks that he is behind the Cornucopia. As Claudius announce the Games to begin, the countdown begins. The cannon is heard and katniss dives into the water and quickly arrives onto the narrow rocky wedge. However, she sees Brutus arriving right behind her and begins dashing toward the Cornucopia. Besides her on the rocky edge at her right, Gloss is running, but he trips, gaining her to an advantage. When she reached the Cornucopia, she retrieved a bow and quiver of arrows, she turns and shoots Gloss in the calf, but is then startled by a sound, revealed to be Finnick Odair, who quickly shows her his golden bracelet that symbolizes their alliance. Finnick then yelled for her to duck before spearing the District 5 male, who had approached Katniss from behind wielding a spear, with a trident. Katniss began to drive the arriving Career tributes away. Finnick told Katniss that he will search for Peeta, and for her to hold the Careers off. Katniss then shoots an arrow at Enobaria, but dives in, before the arrow could find her. Finnick told Katniss, that Mags found Peeta. Finnick and Katniss run to the rocky wedge where Mags was, where she was pointing to Peeta fighting the District 9 male. Finnick dives him to save him, but the two tributes pull eachother underwater. A few moments later a corpse floats up and Peeta ascends, thrashing for air. When they return onto the rocky wedge, the Career Tributes have already formed an alliance and have gathered supplies, forcing them to leave. It is then mentioned by Johanna Mason that Beetee got a knife in the back when he went to retrieve a spool of wire.
Casualties: In the novel, the only described death was the District 5 man's, who was speared in the chest by Finnick Odair. At night, the portraits shown are the District 5 man, male Morphling, Cecelia, Woof, both from District 9, District 10 woman, and Seeder. In the film, the District 5 man's death is shown in similar fashion. Also, Peeta grappled with the District 9 man, and drowned him in the water. At night, the portraits shown are the same as shown in the novel.

Notes: In the film, the order of clips were changed around therefore creating a different order from the original.
- The District 8 female, District 9 male and female, and District 10 female do not appear at the bloodbath as their portrayers are not stunt actors.
- In the film, the District 10 male is shown to be killed in the bloodbath by Cato. However, later on he is mentioned to have died later on. The time in which he was killed is instead given to the District 5 male.
- All the times are based on the portraits. Several errors occurred during the portrait and the actual time listing. Some timings are blurred out, excluding info.
- In the 74th Hunger Games, Katniss, Peeta, and the District 3 male are the only survivors to not have killed someone. However, the District 3 male did assist in a kill, but didn't actually make it.
- The District 9 male (74th HG), and the District 5 male (75th HG) are both similar, as they fought with Katniss in some way and are then killed by a career tribute, Clove and Finnick in this case.
