Cornucopia feast

The feast of the 74th Annual Hunger Games.

A feast was a special event during the Hunger Games, typically held when food was scarce in the arena and things were running slow. Through announcer Claudius Templesmith, the Gamemakers invited the remaining tributes to a feast at a well-known place, such as the Cornucopia, to induce another bloodbath.[1]

History[]

At feasts, there would sometimes be a big table of food, while other times, the Gamemakers provided nothing but a stale loaf of bread for tributes to fight over.[1] Feasts always ended in fatalities.[2]

74th Hunger Games[]

That year, a very special feast was held; instead of food, the feast offered the tributes something they each needed desperately. Peeta Mellark needed medicine to reverse his blood poisoning, so his ally and district partner Katniss Everdeen drugged him with sleep syrup to ensure he wouldn't follow,[3] and she went to collect it alone.[3]

At dawn, the ground opened up in front of the Cornucopia's mouth, and a round table rose up with four backpacks sitting on it. Each one was marked with the number of the remaining tributes' districts. Districts 2 and 11's packs were large and black; District 5's pack was medium-sized and green, and District 12's pack was small and orange.[2] In The Hunger Games film, all the packs were the same size and were color-coded by district, corresponding with the tributes' arena uniforms.[4]

Katniss feast

Katniss runs to the District 12 pack, containing Peeta's medicine.

Foxface was the first to make an appearance at the feast. She'd hidden inside the Cornucopia, so once the table was in place, she jumped out, grabbed her District 5 pack, and ran away, ignoring the others. Katniss sprinted for her backpack next, but she had to fight Clove on her way to get it. Although Katniss was able to grab the small orange bag, Clove pinned Katniss to the ground and taunted her about Rue's death, preparing to mutilate her with a knife.[2]

However, the comment about Rue got the attention of Thresh, who was her district partner. He pulled Clove off of Katniss and briefly interrogated her before bashing her head in with a rock. He then questioned Katniss about her alliance with Rue. After hearing that she sung for the young girl on her deathbed, he decided to let her go so they would be even.[2]

When Cato came looking for Clove, Katniss fled, and Thresh took District 2's backpack as well as his own when he left. Cato stayed by Clove's side as she died of her injuries.[2]

Feast aftermath[]

Several days after the feast, Cato set out to fight Thresh, killing him and presumably reclaiming his backpack.[5] When Katniss and Peeta faced Cato in the final three, he was wearing nude-colored body armor that protected him against Katniss's arrows, which Katniss thought must have come from his backpack. However, it also protected his vital organs from the wolf mutts, keeping him alive for hours as they attacked him until morning. Once the sun rose, Katniss was able to get a clear shot and end his suffering.[6]

Trivia[]

  • School in the districts would often be canceled for major events in the Games, such as feasts.[2]
  • The feast in the 74th Hunger Games is the only one to take place during the series.
    • Clove is the only known tribute who was killed at a feast.[2]
  • The contents of Thresh and Foxface's backpacks are a common source of fan speculation.
    • Some theorize that Thresh's pack held a weapon, since he used a rock as an improvised weapon at the feast.[2] It is also possible that Thresh's pack had body armor like District 2's, either to protect against Katniss's arrows or prolong a fight between him and Cato.
    • Foxface was seen earlier in the novel stealing food from the Careers' supplies,[7] and she later stole nightlock berries that Peeta was collecting,[5] so it's likely that once Katniss destroyed the stockpile, Foxface began to starve. In that case, her pack may have contained food.
