The memory book is a book constructed by Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, with later contributions from Haymitch Abernathy. It was designed to commemorate important people in their lives who had died, but was later expanded beyond its original purpose.[1]

History

In the aftermath of the Second Rebellion, Katniss slowly recovered from a deep depression. Inspired by her family's plant book, she told Dr. Aurelius about her idea for the memory book. He sent a package of parchment on the next train so she could begin the project.[1]

The creation of the memory book became as much a therapeutic exercise as a crafting project. Each entry contained an image of a person— either a photograph or, if none was available, a sketch or painting by Peeta— and a page of memories about them that would be "a crime to forget."[1]

Haymitch eventually added twenty-three years' worth of tributes that he mentored. Katniss and Peeta sealed the pages with salt water (possibly tears) and vowed to live well. Later, they would add "strange bits of happiness", suggesting that the book eventually became a way to commemorate more than those who had passed.[1]
