The City Circle is a looping road in the center of the Capitol where the Training Center and the president's mansion are located.[1]

Annual events[]

The Hunger Games[]

Tribute Parade[]

On the second day leading up to the annual Hunger Games, tributes ride chariots through the city in specially-made costumes inspired by their districts' industries. After about twenty minutes, the procession ends in the City Circle, when the twelve chariots pull up in front of the president's mansion to listen to a welcoming speech. Then the anthem would play, and the chariots would finally pull into the Training Center.[1]

Interviews[]

The night before the Hunger Games officially began, tributes gathered on a stage in front of the Training Center to be interviewed before a crowd in the City Circle.[2] After surviving the arena, the new victor and their support team took to the same stage to watch the official recap of the Games. They would then be formally crowned by the president.[3] The most recent victor would return there several months later for another interview on their Victory Tour.[4]

Description[]

The City Circle is a looping, circular road surrounded by buildings on all sides. During the Tribute Parade, spectators watched the procession from the windows, and there was at least one screen in the City Circle.[1] When interviews were held, they set up an "elevated seating unit... for prestigious guests", such as mentors and stylists. A balcony to the right of the stage was reserved for Gamemakers, and all other balconies were claimed by television crews. Other spectators had to stand in the City Circle or crowd into side streets.[2]

History[]

Second Rebellion[]

During the Battle of the Capitol, Katniss Everdeen led Squad 451 on an unsanctioned mission to reach the presidential mansion in the City Circle and assassinate President Coriolanus Snow.[5] When she finally reached it, the children of Capitol refugees were gathered outside, having been offered asylum there; however, they were really being used as human shields.[6] On orders from District 13's President Alma Coin,[7] a hovercraft marked with the Capitol insignia dropped silver parachutes into the crowd, like the ones used to deliver Hunger Games sponsor gifts. Instead of aid parcels, these were actually twice-detonating bombs. After the first explosion, rebel medics and Peacekeepers united to assist the wounded, and a second explosion killed the aid workers. Katniss's younger sister, Primrose Everdeen, was one of the casualties of the City Circle bombing.[6]

Aftermath[]

After the war, the captured President Snow was set to be executed by Katniss Everdeen in the City Circle, tied to a post outside his mansion. However, instead of firing her arrow at Snow, Katniss assassinated President Coin.[8] Giant screens broadcasted her as she was taken into custody immediately after. Katniss was then held in her old quarters in the Training Center during her trial in absentia.[9]

Trivia[]

  • In the films, the Training Center was located along a long, straight road known as the Avenue of the Tributes, where a large government building stood in place of the president's mansion,[10] which was located elsewhere in the city.[11][12]
  • In The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2, the City Circle remained the location of the mansion and the bombing, but Snow's execution and Coin's assassination took place on the Avenue of the Tributes instead.[12]
