Making of[]

"There are some quiet songs, there are some sad songs, but these songs are strong."
—Lorde

Lorde was initially approached to do a song for the film's end credits, but having seen and enjoyed the previous films, she expressed an interest in doing more. She was then asked to curate the soundtrack as well. In preparation, she read the books, rewatched the movies, and was sent the end of the film by director Francis Lawrence. This inspired her to write "Yellow Flicker Beat", the end credits song.[1]

In the process of curating the soundtrack, Lorde tried to appeal to other artists as personally as possible so they would understand how involved she was. When she was choosing people, she said she was thinking about strength, which she sees as a major theme of the films: mental and physical strength being pushed to their limits.[1]

Grace Jones was one of the first people to sign onto the project, and Lorde said she had her eye on Kanye West very early on as well. She also said she had the idea to bring an 80s artist onto Charli XCX's song to make it "kind of a then-and-now moment"; she recruited Simon Le Bon from Duran Duran for the job. She personally went to Tove Lo about writing a song for the album; she liked the first song Lo showed her, but it didn't fit with the project, so she tasked Lo with writing something only she could make, resulting in "Scream My Name". Overall, Lorde said it was fun and she was grateful for the experience to work with so many artists.[1]
