High speed train concept

A train traveling at high speed.

Trains are the primary method of travel throughout Panem. They are mainly reserved for the shipment of one district's goods and materials to another, and for the transportation of Capitol officials. Most of Panem's citizens are not authorized to travel by train unless they are reaped for the Hunger Games, as travel between the districts is forbidden except for officially sanctioned duties. Each district has at least one train station where trains stop to load and unload their cargo.

Trains are manufactured in District 6, and hold a position on their seal.[1]

History[]

Prior to his death, Coriolanus Snow, the Grandma'am, and Tigris would always await the train carrying Crassus Snow from the Capitol during the first few months of the First Rebellion.[2]

A train arrived to the Capitol on the Wednesday following the reaping for the 10th Hunger Games, carrying the tributes in two cargo cars before they were ushered into a truck.[2]

After the Games, Coriolanus was sent to District 12 via train, having to travel more than twenty-four hours before arriving. The train had originally been full of Peacekeeper recruits bound for different districts and gradually emptied until Coriolanus was left alone.[3]

74th Hunger Games[]

After being reaped for the 74th Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark were ushered to their district's train station and into a Capitol train, where they were given their own private chambers. The dinner came in multiple courses and was full of rich food, the likes of which neither tribute was used to.[4] When the train stopped at a platform to refuel, Katniss threw the packet of cookies Mr. Mellark had given her out the window. Upon approaching the Capitol, the train entered a tunnel going through the mountains, the only route of access to the city from the eastern districts.[5] After winning the Games, Katniss and Peeta took another Capitol train back to District 12.[6]

A train was also used to transport Katniss and Peeta through the districts on their Victory Tour. Claiming to be drunk, Haymitch staggered out of the train during a refueling to talk to Katniss away from potential cameras.[7] Later, a part on the train malfunctioned and had to be replaced, delaying the schedule for at least an hour. Katniss visited the car full of Peeta's paintings during this time.[8] Throughout the Victory Tour, Peeta spent most of his nights roaming the train.[9]

Second Rebellion[]

Bonnie and Twill escaped District 8 by boarding a boxcar full of fabric on a train to District 6, then fleeing at a fuel stop and walking to District 12 on their own.[10]

A hundred Peacekeepers traveled to District 12 via train following the announcement of the third Quarter Quell. Katniss and Peeta were soon escorted into a train to the Capitol with little fanfare.[11]

During the Second Rebellion, a derailed train spilled toxic waste in one of the districts.[12] In District 2, there was a train system to transport miners from the Nut to the center of the main town.[13] After the Nut was bombed, a pair of trains carrying miners entered the train station. One of them was on fire and had smoke billowing against the windows.[14] Squad 451 rode to the Capitol in a cargo train, along with large numbers of District 13 soldiers, in preparation for the invasion.[15]

Near the end of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2, Katniss Everdeen rides home to District 12 from the Capitol by train, along with Haymitch Abernathy and Peeta Mellark.[16] A large box of parchment sheets was sent to Katniss on a Capitol train, which she had requested to make a memory book.[17]

Description[]

Freight trains[]

Trains are the primary mode of transportation of all the districts' goods, most of which gets delivered to the Capitol.[4] The cargo trains used to transport tributes to the Capitol Zoo before the 10th Hunger Games had heavy metal chains and padlocks securing the livestock cars they were carried in.[2]

During the Second Rebellion, cargo trains were used as a mode of transportation for the rebels to deploy troops across Panem and to the Capitol itself.[15]

High-speed Capitol trains[]

Capitol trains travel at an average speed of 250 miles per hour and were often used to transport tributes to the Capitol for the Hunger Games in less than a day. Tributes were given separate compartments, each with a bedroom, a bathroom, and a dressing area containing luxury clothes. The interior design is very plush and expensive, featuring a bar car, polished paneled walls, mahogany tables, and a variety of foods and refreshments for the tributes—including coffee, hot chocolate, orange juice, stew, and rolls.[4] However, Katniss believed that every word they spoke on a Capitol train would be recorded.[7]

The last car of the train has chairs and couches, as well as back windows that retracted into the ceiling to reveal an open view of the landscape.[8]
