Thom was Gale's old mining friend who became a coal miner around the same time as Gale did in Catching Fire. He also appeared at the end of Mockingjay. Thom was native to the Seam in District 12.
Biography
Thom was Gale's friend for a long time, before he met Katniss. In the few times Thom is mentioned in the books, he is often with Bristel, a fellow miner. They shared similar interests and came from the same place (the Seam) and together went into the occupation of coal mining during Katniss's time in the Hunger Games. When she came back, Gale's time with Thom was minimized to just working in the mines. Thom's loyalty to Gale is shown after he is whipped for breaking the law, where he helps Katniss carry Gale to Mrs Everdeen. When the Capitol burned down District 12, Thom was one of the people to escape with Gale, his and Katniss' families, Greasy Sae, and many others from District 12 adding up to just under 900 survivors. They were brought from the bordering forests to District 13 a few days after the disaster and Thom, like Gale, became a soldier in the rebellion against the Capitol. Though he was not heard from, Thom made his way through the war and was seen again by Katniss when she was confined to District 12 after assassinating President Coin. Thom and Katniss are shown on good terms, and it seems both share the depression of Gale leaving the people of 12 for a better life in 2. It was Thom who informed Katniss that Madge Undersee and her family, along with two of the family's workers, did not survive the destruction of District 12. It is presumed that Thom now lives a normal life in the rebuilt District 12.
