Notice
If you are thinking of inviting me to participate in your own custom Hunger Games, thank you for consideration, but no thanks. That is not why I am here. You will need to sound out someone else.
If you have a question or comment related to some administrative action I have done, please see if my FAQ addresses it before messaging me. If you think of something that I need to add to the FAQ, let me know.
Here are some alternate wikis for fan activities if you are more interested in any contributing any sort of fanon content within your user space. It is not excluded here, but is not this wiki's primary focus:
- I need to warn a vandal.
- You can leave them a message using either the {{vandal}} or {{warning}} templates. This helps build a case for blocking them if they ignore the warning (s).
- I need to report a vandal.
- Contact an admin or file a report here.
- I uploaded a duplicate/no longer desired file or have found such a file.
- I created a page, blog post, or Top 10 list and now I want it to be deleted.
- I see content that is more appropriate for a blog that is in the main space.
- I see something that for whatever reason needs to be deleted.
- Tag it for deletion using the {{delete}} tag and specify why it needs to be deleted.
- I have an idea to help improve the wiki.
- Post it in the forum so it can be discussed.
- I'm bored and I don't know what to do (but am still staring at the wiki).
- Take a break from the wiki and do something else. DO NOT do something like create a blog post complaining how bored you are.
About
I am a recent fan of The Hunger Games. I first became aware of it when I saw the books at my local Costco going back to a couple years ago, but the plot point did not pull me in at the time. However when I saw that one of my favorite movies, Battle Royale, was finally getting an American DVD release in March 2012 after all these years and saw that one Amazon reviewer was suggesting that this was due to the imminent release of THG in theatres, that caught my attention.
I read the trilogy in 3 days. The last time I read books of 300+ pages in length in a day was the entire Harry Potter series, which was 7 books in 7 days, although this was not back to back. I saw the movie the second week it came out, which is the earliest I have seen a movie following its release.
My home wiki is the one I founded, the Battle Angel Alita Wiki. I also adopted the Monster Blood Tattoo Wiki and launched the Jormungand Wiki.
Opinions
- Out of the 3 books my favorite is the first.
- On first impression I thought that THG was a BR ripoff, but they are actually quite different. THG focuses more on the gladiatorial and reality TV aspects, which are absent in BR. BR by contrast focuses more on the turmoil of being forced to kill one's friends and how the characters handle this. However it does not go as much into the characters' thoughts to the extent that THG does because of the 3rd person narrative.
- Personally I am a Gale fan and feel that Gale does get shafted. Collins however points out early on that Gale's hatred for the Capitol bothers Katniss and it only grows throughout the series. After the end of the rebellion when the focus shifts to rebuilding, Peeta is the only one who can provide the sense of renewal and healing that Katniss needs to move on despite all the losses she has suffered. This theme is present throughout the trilogy and is reflected in the respective characters. Peeta represents creative energy (a baker and painter), whereas Gale like Katniss is a hunter, destructive energy.
- Overall I think the film did a good job. Here are my thoughts on it:
- Unexpected reaction: I teared up at the Katniss and Rue flower scene. Very surprising since I knew what to expect, but it still hit.
- What surprised me was: When the mutt jumped Peeta from the bushes. The deaths otherwise did not.
- My opinion of Clove became more positive.
- I enjoyed Willow Shields's performance as Prim.
- Nitpicks:
- The change in Peeta and Katniss's treatment of Haymitch which makes him take them seriously.
- When Peeta mentions during the interview that Katniss is the girl he likes, her reaction was not shown on live TV as it was in the book.
- The change in the tracker jacker nest scene, compressing it, as well as the tracker jackers' slower reaction to someone sawing the branch their nest is on.
- The minimizing of Katniss and Peeta's wounds given the PG-13 rating.
- The de-emphasis on obtaining food and water and impression that this was not as big an issue as it is in the book.
