Introduction

A book is not turned directly into a movie, particularly one that is written as a first-person narrative like Catching Fire and the other two books of The Hunger Games Trilogy. The book must be turned into a number of scenes, each with their own location and participants. The screen writers then have to create dialogue for each scene and the scenes must be put into some order by the director. Additional scenes may be needed to advance the story, build suspense or develop characters. Other scenes may be necessary because some parts of the story are explained by Katniss herself. Some scenes may be eliminated to support the narrative of the movie which is necessarily different from the book.

I thought that as the screen writer(s) work to finish the script for Catching Fire that I would begin to construct the scene list from the book. Fans can comment on which scenes they are looking forward to seeing most and which are likely to end up eliminated.

Scene List

Scene Number Scene Name Scene Participants (when Katniss is alone she is represented here, otherwise it is assumed) Scene Location Scene Summary
1 “The Old Neighbhourhoods” Katniss Woods out of bounds, Katniss’s Old Home Katniss reflects on the changes to her life since arriving back from The Hunger Games. Substantial changes have also occurred in Gale’s life now that he has taken up his coal mining duties.
2 “Everdeen Groceries Delivery” Hazelle (Gale’s mother) Gale’s Home Katniss delivers her catch of the day that keeps Gale’s family fed. She also reinforces her continued confusion about her thoughts for Peta “Only it wasn’t just a strategy for Peta. I’m not sure what it was for me.”
3 “Katniss the schmoozer”

Greasy Sae

Darius Cray

The Hob Katniss is now one of the main benefactors of the Hob’s economy, spreading her wealth around. She also has an apparently cozy relationship with local law enforcement. She reinforces her relationship with Haymitch “…. I owe him, too. And that’s for always.” while she purchases some liquor for her former mentor.
4 “Awakening the drunk”

Peta Haymitch

Haymitch’s Home Katniss awakens Haymitch from his liquor-induced slumber with the aid of ice water. Peta arrives with bread. Once again Katniss’s uncertainty regarding her feelings for Peta is on display. “Just the sound of his voice twists my stomach into a knot of unpleasant emotions like guilt, sadness, and fear. And longing. I might as well admit there’s some of that, too. Only it has too much competition to ever win out.”
5 “Presidential conference – Part 1”

President Snow

President’s assistant

Katniss’s mother

Katniss’s home This is a pivotal scene and will need to be included in the movie (It will be amazing to watch Jennifer Lawrence act opposite a legendary actor like Donald Sutherland). Snow indicates that the authorities are fully aware of the life that Katniss has been leading since her participation in the Hunger Games. Snow indicates he would have preferred her (and Peta’s) death at the end of the Hunger Games (a bit too late for that now) but now is left with cleaning up Crane’s posthumous mess. Katniss also reveals that perhaps she is not as naïve about the impact of her actions as it might appear in book one. “I ask, both chilled and somewhat elated by the possibility.” Snow also is amazingly perceptive regarding Katniss’s central uncertainty regarding Peta. “At what point did he realize the exact degree of your indifference?” Some fabulous dialogue will hopefully be preserved: “And you were pretty good, too, with the love-crazed schoolgirl bit.”, “It must be very fragile, if a handful of berries can bring it down.”, “Peta. How is the love of your life?”, “How’s the handsome cousin?”
6 “The Kiss” Katniss in flashback Woods out of bounds Katniss explains a bit of her life since the Hunger Games. She reveals her understanding of Gale’s thoughts for her “or that he no longer cared for me.” but also labels him her “best friend”. Then, as they return to the Hob to trade their catch of the day, Gale surprises Katniss with a kiss. Katniss then prepares a response for their next meeting focused on her self-imposed chastity “how I didn’t want a boyfriend and never planned on marrying,”. She doesn’t get to present it though and remarks on the huge impact this one quick moment has on their friendship “Gale had shattered some invisible barrier between us and, with it, any hope I had of resuming our old, uncomplicated friendship.”
7 “Presidential conference Part 2”

President Snow

Katniss’s home Another critical exchange as it sets up the emotion-laden tour of the districts. We also get another great exchange of dialogue which I hope is preserved: “Aim higher in case you fall short.”, “What do you mean? How can I aim higher?”, “Convince me.”.
8 “Aftermath” Katniss’s mother Katniss’s home A short scene between Katniss and her mother ensues. Katniss reassures her mother that all is fine with the Capitol and the president’s visit is routine.
9 “Washing away blood” Katniss Katniss’s bathroom tub Katniss attempts to make sense out of her short exchange with President Snow while she bathes in preparation for her prep team’s arrival.
10 “Making Katniss Beautiful Again”

Octavia

Venia

Flavius Katniss’s mother

Katniss’s bathroom The trio arrives to prepare Katniss for her tour of the Districts. At the same time the scene provides critical back story about the Quarter Quell.
11 “Reunion with Cinna”

Cinna

Effie

Prim

Camera crew Katniss’s mother

Katniss’s home We get a description of an attempt to teach Katniss a talent (as if hitting a squirrel in the eye with an arrow is not a talent) .
12 “The Dance Begins”

Peta

Walkway between homes Peta and Katniss exchange a wintery kiss before their departure for the cameras.
13 “Talking in the Snow” Haymitch Outside the train Katniss explains the recent visit with President Snow and the implications for her and the people around her. Collins provides support for Team Gale, “I will never have a life with Gale, even if I wanted to.” But in the end, Katniss realizes that her life is now inextricably linked to Peta’s and marriage is essentially mandated.
14 “Options” Katniss Katniss’s room on the train All the options are on the table (including, briefly, suicide, recalling the berries again) as Katniss runs through her next moves understanding her future has now been all but assigned to her by the Capitol.
15 “Stewing in the morning” Effie Dining Car on the train Effie and Katniss eat breakfast on their “travel day” before arriving at District 11.
16 “Making Katniss even more beautiful”

17 “Lunch”

Dining Car on the train The team shares a quiet lunch. Quiet because Katniss continues to perseverate over her options and future. The train breaks down throwing Effie into a tizzy as she needs to rework their schedule. Katniss snaps at her and leaves the dining car.
18 “Relationship Renewed” Peta Outside the train Peta and Katniss renew their relationship. Katniss once again reinforces her true ambivalence for Peta’s affection, “There had been times when I didn’t honestly know how I felt about him. I still don’t, really.”
19 “Reliving horrors” Peta Peta’s car on the train After a brief stop to apologize for snapping at Effie (which may or may not be needed in the movie), Katniss reviews the paintings that Peta has created as his talent. She is horrified to see that he has painted a number of scenes from the arena, with her in many of them. They discuss the nightmares that each has had since their victory in the Hunger Games.
20 “Let the tour begin”

Downtown – District 11

This dramatic scene holds many surprises and is perhaps one that will undergo the most “rethink” before shooting begins. Peta’s offer of financial support for the District 11 tribute families remains likely to be excised and exactly what Katniss says to illicit the crowd’s response can be re-profiled to fit with the directors/screen writer(s) other changes to this section of the book.

The killing of the District 11 person can also be altered to fit with the rest of the drama.

21 “Haymitch – tour guide of District 11”

Haymitch Peta

Justice Building – District 11

This scene will hopefully be shot in one long take as the three main characters hurry to the roof of the justice building guided by Haymitch. The exchange at the end is crucial to everyone’s understanding of their actions and the impact of those actions so far, including Haymitch’s actions during the Hunger Games. After Katniss finally explains the pre-tour exchange with President Snow, Peta’s angry reply is one of his most important emotional exchanges so far in Catching Fire “It’s exactly like that! I have people I care about too, Katniss! Family and friends back in District Twelve who will be just as dead as yours if we don’t pull this thing off.”

President Snow’s imperceptible interaction with Katniss at the end of the scene indicating his displeasure with the tour devastates Katniss. She realizes all is lost and begins to plot her escape, however improbable that might be, from the grip of the Capitol.
25 “Snow Ball”

Peeta

Effie

President Snow Plutarch Heavensbee

President Snow’s mansion The official ball for the (now engaged) couple is held. Plutarch makes his entrance, showing Katniss the famous clock which will play a central role in the later part of this book.
26 “The long road home”

Peeta

Katniss’s car on the train A short exchange between the two engaged “lovers” who discuss nightmares and sleeping arrangements as they got closer to home.
27 “Reality TV” Katniss Mayor of District 12 home Katniss stumbles onto information about the uprising in District 8 while preparing for the evening ball at the Mayor’s house.
28 “Flashback” Katniss Mayor of District 12 home

Katniss is in the woods on her way to the cabin for a rendezvous with Gale. She recollects the rest of the scene above in a flashback. We get more back story about the pin.

29 “Gale of the Forest” Gale Cabin near the lake

This is a pivotal scene. Gale and Katniss draw ever closer in this scene which will be easy to shoot but will have to bring the right emotional level from both Jennifer and Liam.

Gale’s pronouncement of his love for Katniss will have to come as a complete shock and surprise to Katniss. As well, she will have to leave him gasping with the knowledge that his love will go unaccepted.

Katniss lets slip what she has seen in the scene before on the TV providing information about the uprising in district 8. Gale reacts strongly to this information. Katniss at the end of the scene thinks of possible options she has to get Gale’s family to abandon District 12.

30 “Filling in Peeta” Peeta Pathway to the Square – District 12

Coming out of the woods, Katniss seeks out Peeta to explain her plan and seek his approval and agreement. He is at first supportive but questions Katniss’s commitment to the abrupt plan. She is insulted “Then you don’t know me. Be ready. It could be anytime.”

At the end of this scene they hear the commotion in the square.

31 “The Empire Strikes”

Gale

Peeta

Townfolk

Haymitch

Darius

Purnia

Head Peacekeeper (Romulus Thread)

Members of Gale’s mining team (Bristel and Thom)

Square – District 12 Another important scene but one that will likely undergo substantial change. Gale is whipped in the square for his transgression of hunting in the forest, something that has brought great joy to him and Katniss and very much underpins their relationship, something that is very much missing from the Peeta relationship. There is also a change at the top of the peacekeeper regime as the Capitol clamps down on the districts. Katniss is substantially injured in the exchanged but nowhere near as severely as Gale who needs weeks of attention to regain his health.
32 “Medicine woman”

Katniss’s mother

Prim

Haymitch

Peeta

Madge

Hazelle

Gale’s mother

Katniss’s home

This is a long and complex scene. Katniss’s mom tends to Gale’s wounds. Peeta tends to Katniss and Haymitch supports everyone. Madge makes a brief appearance with some medicine from her mother.

Most importantly, the threat to Gale’s life brings clarity to Katniss’s feelings for him (“Gale is mine. I am his.”). Her self-loathing reappears.

33 “Return to the Arena” Katniss Katniss in bed

She dreams of an encounter with Clove, the tribute killed by Thresh at the end of the Hunger Games. She awakes confused and at first wishes that Peeta was present to comfort her but he is tending to Gale, the person she has just professed her love for. Interestingly, she very explicitly links her choice of Gale to her support for the rebellion (“I have chose Gale and the rebellion, a future with Peeta is the Capitol’s design, not mine”). Perhaps Suzanne is putting in our minds a doubt that Katniss’s feelings for Gale are not romantic but tactical, much like her relationship with Peeta.

A blizzard has descended on the district something that will be interesting to see if it is depicted in the movie as it gives Katniss some time to think and regroup after a very troubled series of events.

34 “Plotting the future – again” Katniss Katniss’s bedroom Ok this is really a continuation of the scene above. Katniss describes the jettisoning of her first plot (lets all flee) and describes its replacement (standing up to the Capitol). For the first time she realizes that Peeta’s skills as an orator will be vital if any rebellion has any chance of succeeding.
35 “Medicine Woman – Part 2”

Gale

Prim

Katniss’s mother

Katniss’s kitchen

Katniss’s mother continues to tend to Gale who has survived the night. Snow is applied to both Gale and Katniss. Katniss apologizes for her screams of support for Gale’s pain relief the night before. Her mother’s reply “You’ve seen how people are, when someone they love is in pain” triggers additional thoughts from Katniss again mulling over her relationship with Gale in her mind.

She phones Peeta who has returned to his house as the storm continues. They have an awkward conversation.

36 “Three Musketeers”

Peeta Haymitch

Village pathway

The three walk and talk about their plans. Some classic dialogue will hopefully be captured in the movie “Worked through the flaws in that plan, did you, sweatheart?” and “I want to start and uprising!” “Do you know she asked me if I’d like to give you away? I told her the sooner the better.”

Jennifer’s ability to pivot from “love-struck school girl” to rebel leader (hello Carrie “Princess Leia” Fisher) at this point will be crucial to her believability from this point onwards and particularly in Mockingjay to follow. She has to play someone who naively believes that you can start a revolution by just force of will.

At the end of their walk into town they come across the square which has been transformed with propaganda banners and menacing machine gun placements. They watch in the distances as the Hob is burned to the ground.

Haymitch leaves them to find a substitute for his reliable source of alcohol (the Hob).

Peeta and Katniss continue to Gale’s house where they find that the District’s need for washing has suddenly declined precipitously. Katniss also realizes (with the arrival of new peacekeepers, and scrutiny from Haymitch), that starting a revolution maybe a bit more dangerous than she first believed.

They then go hand in hand to the Hob for one final view of the building. This will likely be shot as a defining moment separating the “old” district life from the new.

37 “Under new management” Katniss District 12

In monologue, Katniss describes quickly the worsening situation in the District as the evil forces of the Capitol ensure order is maintained.

38 “Out of bounds” Katniss Woods out of bounds – electric fence

Katniss receives her wedding dresses and freaks out. She heads for the forest to collect her thoughts.

39 “Bonnie and Twill”

Bonnie Twill

House by the lake

Katniss encounters two runaways from District 8. They provide a long explanation of the failed attempted rebellion in their district and their escape. They plan on going to district 13 (link with Mockinjay). They also reveal that Katniss remains their one hope (You’re practically all anyone’s talked about since – “.)

Already there is speculation on the internet that this scene will not be shot. It doesn’t lead to anything for these characters and there are other ways of displaying the information they have in the movie.

If this scene does survive, it will be an indication that the screen writers have instructions to stick very close to the “source” material.

40 “no way back” Katniss Electrified fence

Katniss is trapped on the wrong side of the fence when it is electrified (trap undoubtedly set by the Capitol). She is forced to jump down from a substantial height and suffers a broken tailbone and other injuries.

If the above Bonnie and Twill scene is axed expect that this one will go with it. This will allow the screenwriters to avoid her injuries completely

41 “security upgrade”

Peeta

Haymitch

Katniss’s mother

Prim Peacekeepers

Katniss’s home

Katniss arrives home limping after jumping from a tree that overhangs the (now suddenly) electrified fence. She is met by her mother, Prim, Peeta and Haymitch and two peacekeepers that have a message from the head of law enforcement. Some humour is played out to cover Katniss’s absence (which could provide a light moment in an otherwise very dark first act of this movie).

Katniss is tended to by her mother. She is sent to bed with some sleep syrup. Her complex relationship with Peeta reappears “For some reason that I can’t quite form, I know I’m not allowed to ask that”. She says when she thinks of asking him to come to bed with her, to comfort her after her injuries are tended to.

If the entire Bonnie/Twill exchange goes, this scene may end up on the chopping block. Having Katniss injured simply increases the complexity of time playing out in the first act. No substantial plot items arise so cutting this scene from the movie will have no real impact.

42 “The book” Peeta Katniss’s house

Katniss awakes from her slumber and time marches forward as she heals from her injuries. Her relationship with Peeta is further deepened by work on a book of plants and their use.

It will be interesting to see how the director signals the marching forward of time. We may see episodes of Katniss and Peeta together doing things like working on the book or we may just jump forward to the announcement of the quarter quell.

43 “The Sign” Katniss Katniss’s home

Katniss catches a glimpse of the Mockingjay described in the Bonnie and Twill scene. She is made aware that perhaps District 13 exists and wonders what is there now.

This is another short scene that may just never get shot. This entire section of the book will need some very nifty work by the screen writer as there is limited action and very little character development. Again we may skip from Gale’s whipping all the way to the announcement of the quell.

44 “Bridal preparation”

Venia

Octavia

Flavius

Cinna Effie

Katniss’s home The prep team arrives for the photo shoot of Katniss in her wedding dresses (this will be unbelievably hilarious if shot as Jennifer Lawrence in a wedding dress will drive up the male attractiveness of this movie by like a gazillion per cent). The prep team mentions the bad weather in district 4 which has made getting sea food difficult. They also indicate other supply issues which has Katniss sure that a rebellion has broken out across the outlining districts based on precisely zero evidence.
45 “Bridal Show”

Effie

Cinna

Katniss’s home Katniss models the various wedding dresses driving up the male appeal of this movie.
46 “Haymitch update” Haymitch Walking to town

The two rebel leaders exchange information and plot the future. Katniss realizes once again that a rebellion is hard work.

47 “Wedding Surprise”

Prim
Ceasar

Cinna

Katniss’s Home

This is another long and complex scene that will need to be shot as it provides the jumping off point for the second half of the story (acts two and three).

Caesar and Cinna host a TV show that is mandatory viewing throughout the country. The pictures of Katniss in her wedding dresses are broadcast to an adoring nation (again allowing the movie to score demographic points with the young male audience). Voting is initiated to pick the best one (Collins’ not that subtle acknowledgement of the American Idolization of our culture)

We then learn that the Capitol will try its best to kill Katniss in the arena long before she can actually appear in one of those dresses at her wedding. The Quarter Quell ritual is described by Snow. We learn of the link between Katniss’s mother and the 50th anniversary Quell when her close friend, Maysilee Donner, was killed and Haymitch was the victor.

Katniss reacts to the knowledge that her life of relative pampering has ended very abruptly. This will of course be a key scene for Jennifer. I doubt it will be shot like it is described in the book but the rage will have to be pretty intense, much like the sorrow we saw from her in the woods scene just after Rue’s death.

Katniss then escapes to Haymitch’s house (round about through another empty house in the victor’s village). For the first time, she drinks with Haymitch, symbolizing her becoming a bit more like him, robbed of some (??all) of her sanity by the experience with the games.

This scene may be shot with all three victors (Haymitch, Peeta and Katniss) together so that they can all react to the news at once. It would not be a stretch to have them all in one place to view the wedding dresses on TV.

Katniss also once again is reminded of the incredible level of sacrifice that Peeta will contemplate to protect his financé (“While I was wallowing around on the floor of that cellar, thinking only of myself, he was here, thinking only of me. Shame isn’t a strong enough word for what I feel”).

Haymitch and Katniss make a pack to keep Peeta alive.

48 “still out of reach” Gale Katniss’s home

This reads like a short scene but I believe it will be shot. A drunken Katniss returns to her home and finds Gale there. Gale must express his understanding in a very few lines that he completely understands the goal of the Capitol to kill her. Katniss must portray her understanding that she is giving up on life.

This is a transformative pivot. Jennifer will need to express her hopelessness to the one person she has fallen in love for.

49 “family support”

Prim Katniss’s mother

Katniss’s bedroom

Katniss stumbles in to the shower after her first experience with alcohol. She returns to bed and is comforted by her family.

We learn a number of things about Prim here as well, she is now almost the height of Katniss (sorry Willow is not going to grow that quickly between now and August/September when principle photography begins). She is now supporting her mother by taking care of patients. Collins is subtly allowing the audience to see the movement of the role that Katniss plays in the family to begin its transfer to Prim now that Katniss believes she is doomed.

50

“Training Plan”

Haymitch Peeta

Haymitch’s house

Peeta takes the preparations for the upcoming games seriously. Katniss understands completely that the Capitol wants her dead and so it is understandable that she is not enthusiastic about investing time in preparing for own demise.

Haymitch and Katniss discuss who is going to be going into the arena with her.

51 “Training”

Haymitch Peeta

District 12

Katniss and Haymitch both relent and agree with Peeta to seriously prepare for the games. They watch videos, improve their physical fitness and learn new skills. This may be shot as a montage or a series of scenes with no dialogue as all three of the victors work on their readiness for combat OR this part will be eliminated and we will move quickly to the reaping scene and on to the Capitol.

52 “Speculation” Gale District 12

Gale and Katniss spend a short amount of quality time together while Gale walks back to his house after working with the three victors on snares for the arena.

He pulls her into an existential discussion of their relationship if Peeta had not survived the games (“And where would we be, Katniss”). Katniss once again reinforces the chaste life she believes she wants (“I still wouldn’t have wanted to marry anyone”.)

Katniss indicates that Gale has been “essential” but her love is limited. (“For loving him, even if it’s only in the limited way that I can manage”.)

53 “Ritual” Population of District 12 District 12 main square

This scene will be shot but it will be short as it is a pivot to the story. The victors are selected for their roles and sent immediately to the train for their ride to the Capitol. No time is given to them to say goodbye. It is not clear from the story why they would not do this before the ceremony as Katniss was fully aware that she was going to be selected as she was the only tribute available. Haymitch has no one really to say goodbye to, and Peeta was fully expecting to volunteer, so again he could have said his goodbye’s before going to the square.

54 “Final Departure” Peeta Train to Capitol Katniss and Peeta watch as the world of their childhood slides out of site for the last time. They both are downtrodden by the fact that they were not given a chance to say goodbye.
“Mourning” Katniss Train to Capitol

Katniss mourns the fact that she was given no time to say goodbye. She does so in monologue. It is difficult to know if this will be shot or will just be a short shot of Jennifer’s face as the train pulls away from the station as she realizes she is likely never to return.

“First last meal”

“Games research”

Peeta Haymitch

Train to Capitol

The team reviews the reaping results. There are short descriptions of some of the tributes. These descriptions have already lead to many casting speculations on the internet. Finnick, the one tribute who plays the most significant role in act three, is introduced to us.

“Nightmares return” Katniss Train

Katniss has one of the many nightmares linked to the Hunger Games. There has been some speculation that footage from the first movie will be inserted into the second to depict these nightmares which seems likely.

“Comforting conversation” Peeta Train

Katniss, awoken by the nightmare, seeks out Peeta. This scene will be an important one to allow the two leads to continue to evolve their relationship. The scene may be extended with additional dialogue. The scene in the first movie where Peeta describes his wish to be himself at death to Katniss was a key scene for both actors and I believe something like that is called for at this point. That scene allowed us to witness Jennifer with her hair down, focused on Peeta providing the viewer with a completely different view of Jennifer.

They embrace and, from the description, Peeta kisses Katniss on the neck making a substantial impact on Katniss. She indicates she has closed the Gale door once and for all. An attendant enters abruptly ending whatever was to happen.

“Games Research – Part 2”

Peeta Haymitch

Train

Peeta and Katniss review the second quarter quell won by Haymitch. We get some important back story information about the link between Madge (who was written out of the first movie, the one real friend that Katniss has back at school, it being important to remind the viewers that Katniss is still of high school age) and Maysilee Donner, one of the female District 12 tributes killed during the quell. Madge is the niece of Maysilee who owned the mockingjay pin. Maysilee was a close friend of Katniss’s mother and the sister of Madge’s mother (the wife of the Mayor of District 12). We see Haymitch and his conversation with Caesar.

Katniss then describes the games that Haymitch participated in. She quickly realizes that he, like her, found a way of upstaging the game makers by using the force field that surrounds the arena to his advantage.

“Sorrowful reunion”

Flavius

Octavia

Venia

Training Centre

Katniss is put through another round of preparations for the opening ceremony. Her team is distraught with the realization that they are going to lose a close friend and meal ticket once Katniss enters the area for the last time.

Cinna arrives and foreshadows a number of upcoming moments “I always channel my emotions into my work. That way I don’t hurt anyone but myself”.

Jennifer’s on-screen interactions with Cinna have been a key dramatic thread. He seems like a cross between a BFF and father that she never had rather than just a fashion designer.

“Girl alight” Cinna “Remake” Centre

Cinna once again comes up with an ingenious outfit for Katniss and Peeta to wear for the opening ceremony. His dramatic make-up for Jennifer will be another fan highlight I am sure.

It will of course be interesting to see how the new director, known for this visual representation in previous works, translates this costume to the big screen.

”Introducing Finnick”

Finnick

Remake Centre

The speculation regarding the actor playing Finnick has been the central focus of the Hunger Games trilogy fandom since even before the buzz from the first movie died down. Collins gives us a pretty good mental picture of the character but so far the casting directors have not really been following her descriptions closely for other characters, much to the chagrin of many fans.

Finnick sounds like a player and a fickle one at that. His introduction to Katniss is classic dressed in a fishnet and offering the younger Katniss some “sugar”.

This is as close to sexual tension as we get in Act two and we can pretty much guarantee that Jennifer is going to play this one as hot as she can without losing the PG-13 rating. This is particularly true when you consider the description of the make-up she is wearing from the above scene. As well, the scene has some substantial humour built in so it will be interesting to see if the actors can provide the right balance between the seriousness of the preparation for the games and the banter between themselves.

“Chariots on Fire” Peeta Remake Centre

Peeta and Katniss prepare to be paraded again. Katniss again provides evidence of her affection for Peeta as does Peeta (“Our hands find each other without further discussion. Of course we will go into this as one.” and “having an eye for beauty isn’t the same thing as a weakness,” Peeta points out. “Except possibly when it comes to you.”). The two are again the talk of the event as they steal everyone’s thunder with their elaborate coal-fired costumes.

The new director (Francis Lawrence, no relationship to JenniferJ) will be a key asset in shooting this scene. The corresponding scene in The Hunger Games was not well done as it lacked a clean and polished CGI look. Lawrence can (and likely will!!) do better.

“Introducing the competition”

Johanna Mason

Chaff

Haymitch

Seeder

Peeta

Remake Centre

The strategy of keeping the Mockingjay (Katniss) and Peeta alive during the Games begins to take shape. They are introduced to the tributes from other districts who, we will find out later, will provide support and protection during the games.

Chaff provides an abrupt kiss on Katniss’s mouth, startling her. We get a good description of some of the tributes. Katniss learns that Rue’s family was not killed at the District 11 event where her speech caused a riot.

We are also introduced to Johanna Mason, the district 7 tribute whose casting is generating substantial conversation on the internet likely because of her first scene, this one. She first meets our two leads as they are heading back to their quarters. Her elevator ride up with Peeta and Katniss is in the nude after she discards her costume (a tree) from the chariot entrance.

Unfortunately, to keep the PG-13 rating (which Francis Lawrence, no relationship to JenniferJ, must guarantee) this scene will either not be shot or modified to avoid having a nude tribute standing with our two leads. There are all sorts of ways of shooting this and still make it “PG-13” and this will be one test of our director’s skill (and the acting ability of all three actors involved) in maintaining the startling sight of a nude Johanna.

The conversation at the end of the elevator ride is very important even though it comes at an awkward moment just after an intense scene. Peeta explains clearly Katniss’s attraction as an “unspoiled” “pure” (he uses that term twice in a very short scene) vessel. She can therefore take on the role she is going to play (the Mockingjay) without the complications of adult “lust”. The other characters around Katniss understand this and are trying to push her to see if they can get any “rise” out of her but she demurs, maintaining her chaste personae.

Peeta and Katniss arrive at their old quarters and immediately realize that one of the peacekeepers from the Seam back in District 12 has been turned into a mute Avox and stationed in their quarters, a very real reminder of the power of the Capitol.

Haymitch calms Katniss preventing her from reaching out to Darius. She immediately goes to her room sits on the bed dreaming of her old life back in the Seam. There might be some sort of flashback at this point. The director might want to reinforce the fading of Katniss’s life in the Seam.
