Arena

OK. Here's how it works.

Maze2

56 tributes are locked in a giant maze.

There will be mutts. Lots of mutts.

Each of the hedges are 15 feet high and not easy to climb.

The climate is very warm.

There will be water and lakes thrroughout the maze.

The tributes all start at different parts of the maze.

The first one who gets to the middle transports all the others still alive home. So for now the number of victors is unknown.

But it will be dangerous.

The tributes can kill each other.

The mutts can kill the tributes.

The tributes can starve or die of thirst.

Reapings

District 0:

Venus Chrome:

I wake up, pulling back my thin sheets and immeadiately grabbing my soft fur coat from a hook on the wall. The air is chilled, my bare feet are freezing. I carefully walk down the wooden stairs so as not to wake my siblings and parents. Jupiter, my brother, is already awake. Together we get ready and, after 30 minutes, we walk out. The others will, catch up, we're not worried. And sure enough, they're running after us, hastily washed and groomed. But we're not worried about THAT either. What we ARE worried about is the cold creeping up our legs. I hug myself as I join the other 18-year olds in my pen. I see Saturn and Juiter slip into the 13 and 16 year olds' pens. Eris is nowhere in sight, but I'm not worried about her. "May I have your attention, please... OK, boys first." I see the look of determination on Saturn's face, and I pray, "Please don't let him be reaped." "SATURN CHROME!" "Yes!" Saturn yells, then scurries up to the stage to join the escort. She reads another slip. "Jupiter Chrome!" Another cry of agony escapes my lips. "Let's see, girls now... Falin Frost!" I sigh with releif that it's not one of my siblings. that is, until I hear an all-too-farmiliar voice calling, "I VOLUNTEER! Ha, in your FACE, Saturn!" Then Eris is on the stage, too. Then, as if in slow motion, the escort picks a slip of paper from the reaping ball. And before she can read it out loud. I see the name, scrawled in tiny, black letters, but it's there. It's my name.

District 1:

Marvel Dismond:

I stare out my window, the contents of my bowl sloshed back and forth with my spoon. I'm too nervous to eat. "Marvel, eat." My sister, Teresa, walks in and grabs a bowl, filling it up with the stuff in my bowl. "I can't," I say. "Then make yourself useful and take the dog out!" I get up and let out the dog, then see the first few people gathering at the reaping ceremony. The escort this year is tall and thin, about 21 with aqua eyes and makeup and hair the same color. She smiles as she reaches the platform where to two glass bowls stand. For goodness sakes, here's nothing to smile about! I think, before I join my friends. People start arriving by the dozens. We're lucky we live so close, looking at the tired people all around us. Teresa joins the 18-year-olds. "Lydia Peirce!" A 16-year old girl steps forward to the stage. She looks nice, but can probably kill viciously. "Sparkle Chan!" Oh no! Not Sparkle! "Blade Johnson!" A sturdy, 17-year-old boy with an arrogant expression plastered across his face looks up at the escort, narrowing his eyes before stepping between the girls on the platform. "Marvel Dismond!" It only akes a millisecond for the people around me to realize that's my name.

District 2:

Ginger Dunn

I walk outside, rays of sun hitting my face. The air is colder than I wouled have expected, but I'll be fine. I start the long walk down the dirt paths to the Reaping Platform. It's a good 12 miles, but I can handle that. As I see it, a tiny dot in the distance, I begin to run. My feet pound the dirt, sending up storms of billowing dust. I reach the platform, coughing. "Ladies first!" I join the others in my pen. "And the lucky person iiiis... HARPY EVERMIST!!!" A 16-year old jumps up onto the stage. "Any volunteers... no? Well, best of luck then, Harpy. Next is... JAMIE CROCKELL!" "I volunteer!" A girl shouts. "Your name, dear?" "It's Isis Holly." "Well, thank you Isis, best of luck to you also. Now for the boys! Let's see..." Her hand closes around a tiny white slip. "AXL DAVIS!" "I volunteer!" A 15-year old unlocks the gate of his pen and strolls up to the stage. "I'm Everest Sateer." "Thank you, Everest. Last one... GINGER DUNN! Any volunteers?" But the crowd answers only with silence and I am hauled off to my death.

District 3:

Lexi Strong

"16-year olds here!" The stocky escort grumbles, his short black hair combed neatly. He seems upset it's whipping around in the wind, trying to flatten it and hit the wind. I am trampled by a herd of 18-year olds as they psh past like they own the place. "For goodness sakes," I grumble. I look over my shoulder to see some boys slip into my pen. Then I run in, seconds befor the metal gate clangs shut. "Now, for the first tribute," the escort mutters. "BRIGHT STREAK!" The girl runs up onto the stage. "IGNITE MYFIRE!" "Oh for cripes sakes!" Bright, the girl on the platform murmurs, slapping her forehead. "LEXI STRONG!" "That's me!" I yell. I can see one, two people who want to volunteer for me. They're just about to shout when the escort says, "OH, WE HAVE SOME CONFUSION HERE. EVERYONE, PLEASE SIT STILL AND SHUT UP. THANK YOU." He talks to the other people next to him. "NEVERMIND." I get up, wanting to say he didn' ask for volunteers first, but he's already drawing the final district 3 tribute. "STEEL PLATE!" The boy, 17 with dark reddish hair is all too farmilliar. "NO! STEEL!" I yell, wanting to get up, wanting to run to the front of the stage. "YOU CAN'T DO THIS!" I want to scream, angry with everyone. Angry at my district, my escort, the Capitol. Angry at myself especially. I don't want to be dragged out of my district in tears.

District 4:

Michelle Beach

I pull the last strap of the blue dress over my right shoulder. I comb my hair as best I can. I try to clear my mind, but they are haunted with images of the many I have lost. I curse, throw my brush on the floor and bury my head in my hands. Knowing this is not going to help anything, I get up and try to start brushing my hair again. "Michelle, ready?" my aunt calls. "Yes," I lie, putting on some sandals, grabbing my token. As we head out, I turn my face away so my aunt can't see the tears. "Michelle, are you all right?" she asks. "Yes," I say. "Yes, I'm fine." "Good..." she turns her face away, too. About 20 minutes later, we reach the place where the reaping ceremony will be held. The escort this year is a woman with green hair and blue skin. I think it's supposed to make her look like the colors of the ocean, but in reality it makes her look like some sort of horrible mutt or something and I can't help but laugh. I sllide into a pen with the other 17-year-olds who are talking happily, but unlike last year, I don't join in. "Is everyone ready?" the escort calls. "Okay then... ladies first: Kyley Harte!" I look up at the girl on the stage. She's only 12 and looks fragile and weak. "I VOLUNTEER!" I scream, not wanting to let her die. "Very good, your name?" "Michelle." "Ok, come join the stage, Brekelle." "Um, my name is Michelle." But she's already drawing the second girl: "Artemis Elto!" she calls. The girl called Artemis joins the stage. "Hey BREKELLE," she teases. "Shut up," I say, waving her off. Her brother, Apollo, is reaped next. Then a 15-year-old boy walks up when they call Cod Harbor. I know him. He was with me in my family's "fishing accident". And it turns out he's coming to the Games also.

District 5:

Heather Lavender

I wake up, the hum of the power plant lulling me into a daze. I sit up in my bed and open my eyes, crusted around the edges. Pulling on a nice shirt, I stagger over to the mirror and start the daily battle with my hair. I brush out all the knots. Finally, when that's done, I head downstairs. "Well, SOMEbody's a little groggy!" Skott yells from the other side of the room. "Shut up," I mumble, not noticing I'm pouring my cereal on the counter. I roll my eyes as they break out into fits of laughter. "Hi Heather," my two sisters say in unison, flouncing past with their blonde curls trailing out behind them. I sigh, my usual peppy self replaced by anger. "Ready for the Games?" Cinder teases. "Shut up," I say, blinking as she turns on a bright light. "Still tired?" Skott asks. "I had nightmares," I reply, shrugging. It's the truth. My dreams were clogged with nightmares. Horrors of past Games I have been forced to watch with my older sisters to see if there's any "heartbreaking romance". Ick. "Let's go," my father says. Half an hour later, we're at the stage. The escort is a bubbly redhead, who makes a big show about the whole thing. Geez. "H-hey Heather," Malco crest says as he slides into a pen near mine. "Oh, hi," I answer, a little distracted. There's pushing and shoving, screaming, yelling, cursing, then finally everyone settles down. "Ahem... Amanda Hills!" The escort begins the reaping. "Here!" A 17-year old shouts. "I mean, yea. I'm Amanda." She sashays over to the stage. "Heather Lavender!" "That's me!" I yell, running up. "Malco Crest!" Malco is now on the stage.

Malt Easer

The escort is about to draw the last name. I close my eyes, hoping it's not me. I don't want to go into a living hell for who knows how long. But then my name is drawn. The whole of District 5 is silent. The only thing you can hear is the dry wind blowing through the pine trees, the gentle hum of the power plant nearby, lulling me into a daze. Then two peacekeepers grab me and the rest of us and drag us up to a huge train car.

District 6:

Kyle Sutherland

I wake up, the morning sun hitting me in the face and making my eyes water. The air is warm-ish, and I swing my legs over the side of my bed. I walk outside, seeing that the reaping platform isn't far. I dress, wash up, and then I am ready to leave the house. "This way!" a small blonde woman tells me, escorting me to my pen. I settle in among the others, in a comfortable, spacey spot in the back. The reaping ceremony begins. "Ladies first!" the blonde woman who pushes me into the pen reaches her hand into the reaping ball, and I tense up. " Cynthia Cross!" I sigh with releif because it's not Esmerelda. The girl's green eyes have no fear in them, she is doing well to conceal the fact that she's terrified to go to the Games. "Esmerelda..." Esmerelda steps forward -- MY Esmerelda! I want to scream, but it's stuck in my throat. Now the boys are being drawn. "Copper Smith!" That annoying boy from school walks up. Again, no volunteers. "Last one...Harry Gates!" "I VOLUNTEER!" I scream. I HAVE to save Esmerelda, or at least keep her safe. I feel it's my duty. "My name is Kyle. Kyle Sutherland." "Thank you," is the last thing anyone says to me. It's Esmerelda. Esmie, I want to call her. It feels like there's a fire burning inside me. I love the feeling of it. As it reaches my heart, I begin to feel calm and caring. Esmerelda will be safe with me.

District 7:

Fall Breeze

It's still dark out. I roll over and look at the clock. 6:30. I groan, not wanting to wake up. "Fall!" I hear one of my family members calling. "Nooo," I moan, burying my face in my pillow. "It's not even light out!" I call. "It's light enough. Come on, or you'll be late for the reaping." I sigh. Prepare to whip my covers back. I throw them off me all at once and then whip them back on fast as a cobra. But soon I'm sliding out of bed and consuming what I think... what I HOPE is oatmeal. My family isn't known for their amazing careers as chefs. They burn water when it comes to cooking. We get to the reaping platform. I slide into my pen, noticing the boy I kind of like across from me. No, I don't like him, boys are gross. But anyway, now all my attention is focused on the escort. She gives a long speech. Then she draws the people. "Fall Breeze!" That's me! That's me? It IS me! "I'm Fall," I scream. What am I doing? I'm now preparing to die. Oh no. I walk up. The rest of the reaping is kind of a blur.

District 8:

Shay Flax

I wake up early on the day of the reaping. I eat before my family. I try to calm myself, act as if it's just another normal day. Even though it's a Saturday, I pack up my school things and put my new weaving next to it so I can take it straight to the factory. I look out the window. Buildings are all dark. The sun has just begun to streak the night with a soft pink haze, but that is the only sign of life. I put my last binder in my pack and sigh. I will never be able to forget that it's reaping day. I get back in my bed, but it's totally impossible to sleep. I start to drift off. Then I am awoken by cries of. "Reaping Day!" throughout the District. Boy, they're loud. I see some small figures already gathered at the platform. I get up, put on a silky lilac dress, and trudge down the stairs. I stop by the mirror to comb my hair, or at least try to make it look better than this. I reach the platform. The escort is getting himself ready, and he is anxious to begin. You can tell by the way every few minutes he rearranges himself on the seat or pats the reaping ball and swishes his hand around. "Gather around, everyone." He reaches in and draws a name. "Golden Hawbrook!" A big boy steps forward to the platform, eyes on the crowd, determined expression platered across his face. I wish I could be that brave. "Thread Form!" Another boy. "Girls now!" I hear a few cheers from our school cheerleaders. Ick. They're such total idiots. "Pema... Pema Alderwheel!" A girl steps forward. "Thank you Pema... Helen Burke!" "I volunteer!" I yell. "I am Shay Flax!" I look away from everyone gazing at me in horror. The 12-year-old girl, the tribute who would have been, gives me the tiniest of smiles. She gets off the platform as I join it. She says thank you when she passes by. She joins the crowd and I stand next to that Pema girl on the stage. "We have our tributes!" The escort yells. "Thank you."

District 9:

Iridessa Black

I throw back my covers. Today is reaping day. I get out of bed and comb my hair, get my clothes on, and eat. I wonder if I'll get reaped this year. The thought haunts me the whole morning before the Ceremony. I grab my lucky necklace, the one with the golden blue ay on it. I look at myself in the mirror. Jayson looks in. I want to scream, beause I'm in my underwear. But that'll just wake up Mom. "Hey Jayson," I say, not looking at him. Jayson sits down next to me. "Are you nervous?" he asks. I nod, still not looking into his eyes. He fingers the scratch on my face and tears form in mine. I do not want to let them show, though, so I wipe them away. He sees them though. "Aw Iridessa, don't be upset! Just try your hardest if you get reaped. I want you to do your best." "But I'm not as good as the others." "No, you are. You're better." He ties my necklace around my neck. "Look. Idressa, look. There's a jay on it, see? I want you to look at the jay and remember me when you wear it. Know I'll always be with you. You'll do that, you'll try for me? Promise?" I nod again. "Pinky promise?" "Aren't you getting a little old for that?" He grabs my pinky in his. "Now come on," he says. "Breakfast is ready." After I eat, it's time to go. In no time, we're at the Ceremony. Jayson, who's too old now, slides over and lets the maybe-soon-to-be- tributes pass. I get in with the 16-year olds and stand in the corner, slightly apart from the other chattering girls. I talk to no one, make contact with no one. It's like I'm almost invisible. Good. I like it that way. The escort begins to draw the names. "Yuki Ling!" She calls when she finally grasps a slip of paper. A thin girl steps up. Chinese. "Iridessa Black!" I look up in horror. "Iridessa Black? Is there an Iridessa Black?" I raise my hand. All eyes on me, and I hate it. I want to run away. But I can't. I go up to the platform and watch the boys walk up. 2 more people I don't know, Marble Snow and Bake Carson. Well, I sort of know Marble, but only as the wild-child demon kid. Then I am pulled back to my senses. I allow myself to step into the train. Just before that, I clutch Jayson's hand. "You got this, Iridess --" he never finishes the sentence. He is pulled back by the swarm of people. I remember some of his last words to me as I finger the jay charm. "There's a jay on it, see? I want you to look at the jay and remember me when you wear it. Know I'll always be with you." I slip into a compartment and make sure it is unnoccupied. The silent tears begin to slip down my cheeks.

District 10:

Gavin Octavin

I slip into my pen near the others and start to talk to one of my friends. "So," I say, "You think you're going to get reaped this year?" I grin playfully, knowing full-well the chances are SO slim. "No," Darrel says, shaking his head. is hair swings from side to side, a light gold in the pale light. "Sure hope not," he adds. I look over and see Estelle Mar. I kinda-sort-of-maybe-litte-bit like her. Ihope she doesn't get reaped. But again, the chances are slim. The escort reaches his hand into the bowl. He brings out a name. "Wave Oceanus!" he calls. A stocky boy steps up to the stage. "Keeta Starr!" I younger-looking girl with hair dyed light purple. She looks nervous. I want to vounteer, but I'm a boy, so I can't. she looks so helpless though. And scared. "Estelle Mar!" Estelle? No! Estelle! Finally he draws the last name. I clutch my collar of my shirt, a lump forming in my throat. "Max Veraquez!" I breathe a sigh of relief. Then I spot the escort talking to another person from the Capitol. Finally he straightens. "Max Veraquez seems to have died somehow. He was trampled by a herd of cows. So in that case, we have to draw a different name... Gavin Octavin!" Everyone looks at me with shock. A little surprise. A little fear. But mostly relief, that they won't be shipped off to the Games to their doom, to face tributes 10 times stronger than them and mutts that can rip you apart. No idea what the arena will look like. No chance to say a proper goodbye to your friends, your family. And now I am being pulled off the platform to a train, where I slin into the corner.

District 11:

Elli Crest

I look outside my window. The breeze shakes the trees. The apples sway in the branches, the golden grain ready for harvest. It's so beautiful I can almost forget the horror that will come soon for all of us. Or at least all the children from District 11 in the 12-18 year-old range. I slip on the nicest thing I can find. A blue dress. It's winkled, and there's a small rip in the side. I put my belt on hoping it will cover the rip in the nicest piece of clothing I own. I sigh, looking at myself before the mirror. "Are you ready Elli?" My mother calls. "Uh-- coming!" I cry. I tear down the stairs. About 45 minutes later, I am at the reaping platform. The sun is lazy and hasn't risen above the trees, only streaking the sky pink instead of painting over the inky black with a soft powder blue. But I guess the sun doesn't want to witness this horrible day. I slip into line with my friend and we talk briefly before the ceremony actually begins. First, called to the stage are the siblings. Wolf Shade and Ivory sade. I recognize the girl because she often works alongside me in the fields. If it was only a normal reaping, the tributes would have been all ready. There would be only two. Then I hear my name. Echoing around the clearing then coming to a rest and stopping in the air. Shock sweeps over the audience. There are no volunteers for me. Half the other girs relax their shoulders, so thankful it's not tem. They have no more reason to worry. The other boy is Sharpe Swifts. I can recall his name from school. He volunteers for a 13-year-old. I look at Sharpe cautiosly and smile but he only looks past me. Then comes the train. The sun has still not arrived. Maybe it will soon but I will not see it. At least not in District 11.

District 12:

Cedar Mellark

"Dad..." I ask into the darkness. "Cedar, come on. Your sisters are already up." I sit up and squint at my father. An old hunger games tribute. He's now a victor. "It's reaping day," he says. "I know," I say. My mother, Katniss, clings to his shoulder. "Good moring Cedar." "Good morning," I mumble. "What's for breakfast?" "Hey Cedar!" my little sister Primma yells, trailing butcher paper and glue sticks. "Cedar! I made you a token!" she smiles brillianly at the toy she made. It's an old sock with pink hearts all over it. There are 3 eyes on it, all stuck in various places. "What? OK Primma. Get off..." She puts the token in my hand and runs out. I want to smash my head back into the pillow. But I don't. I get up. It takes a great deal of effort, but I get into my finest clothes. My other sister, Ruerose, brushes her long dark hair and my mother styles it into a braid. Rue looks over at me and tosses me my coat. "Come on Cedar," she laughs, silver eyes glinting playfully. how can she be like this? I ask myself. Rue picks up her mockingjay pin. It would have been mine, ut she asked my mother for it first. I got my father's mockingjay pendant. I like it, but the pin is WAY cool. My mother herds us all out the door. I shove Primma' "token" into my pocket and a few minutes later, we're at the reaping platform. The escort, Peppy Trinket, begins to draw the names. "Brianna Oakheart!" "I volunteer! I'm Kajama Odair!" shouts a 13-year-old girl. Oh no! Kajama! "Another victor's child? Well come right up, hon... Trillium Siege!" Another girl mounts the stage. I see a boy in the crowd, eyes flashing with hate at the stage. Another boy is chosen. "I volunteer!" the oy near me shouts. "My name is Titan Siege." He approaches the stage and greets the escort, but his sister's the reason he volunteered. He puts his arm aound her. I could never do that to one of mysisters. Rue would sigh and take my arm off her and Primma would squirm like there's no tomorrow. But I have Kajama. I look over at her and sigh. I almost miss the last name: "Pine Edgerton!" when I decide to volunteer. Volunteer like that boy Titan. He volunteered to protect his sister... well, I'm volunteering to not only protect Kajama, but to show everyone that she's mine. "I volunteer!" I yell. "And your name, dear?" I see Kajama's green eyes burn into mine. But thn she snaps her gaze away. "My name is... Cedar Mellark."

District 13:

Sarah Joseph

I wake up, patting down my spikey green hair that's sticking up. I barely glance at my reflection before running downstairs, slapping on the cleanest dress I can find: a green one with tiers that actually looks kind of pretty on me. I run downstairs and my mother's rushing me out the door. Saying "We'll be late! We'll be late!" I glance at the clock. "We have 45 minutes," I say. "45 minutes is NOT half an hour!" "I know, I know," I reply. I look out the window and see my friend. I run outside towards her. We chitchat breifly before the reaping ceremony will take place. I reach the platform about 4 minutes before the reaping starts. The pens are jam-packed, and I have to shove my way through the crowd to reach the 12-year-old's pen. As if this morning isn't already a train wreck, they just HAD to put my destination in the way back. At last the metal gate clangs shut after my friend. I want to get at least one ally if not more. I smile, scnning the crowd. Oh, that boy from my school, Jackson. He's nice. He' smart. He's athletic. He's cute. He would make a good ally. I smile, arranging my hair into a ponytail. Oh good. Here comes the reaping. "Let's start with the girls!" the escort chirps. I smile. "Sarah Joseph!" she calls my name first. I walk up to the stage and grin at everyone. "Lucky Love!" "What? Oh uh-huh." A girl tears herself away from her little compact mirror and blushes, but you can barely see it under a large layer of makeup. "I'm Lucky," she tells the escort. You're not lucky, you're going to the Hunger Games! I think. This makes me giggle. Lucky shoots me a look like, What are you laughing about, with her eyes all narrow and a scowl on her face. I shoot her an innocent look and she turns back to the crowd. "Now the boys. Shadow Titan!" the escort says. A dangerous-looking kid steps up. He looks kind of weird in my opinion, but I'm not one to talk -- green hair isn't exactly the most normal thing in the Districts. Is it normal? No. But does it look cool? Yes, definetly. Well at least that's what I think. The last boy is drawn. TNT Bomb. Peculiar name, if you asked me. But still, he looks pretty cool too. "We have out District 13 tributes!" the escort shouts in her tinkly voice. I get on the train.

REAPINGS ARE DONE!!!!

Arena

The tributes are stationed at different points of the arena, all equal ditances from the middle. Kyle longs for Esmerelda. Little does he know he is right by her, but he wants to go north instead of south, towards her. Kajama is ready for anyting. The Careers all want to find each other. Sarah Joseph wants to win. The hedges come up out of the ground. The giant maze is ready.

Day I

Blade Johnson's POV:

I watch the walls of the maze rise around me, shutting me in. Yep, no chance of escape. No doors, no windows, 10-foot-high walls of leaves and thorns. No chance of escape there. I look around me just as the gong goes off. I start to sprint forward when I realize I'm not at the Cornucopia and there's no one else on my tail here. I grab a sword buried in the ground 20 yards away. I grab a backpack. Then I start to run. Surprisingly, there's trees in the arena. Pretty weird but cool.

Copper Smith's POV:

I turn a corner and see a mutt. A big, slobbering mut, about the size of a wolf. I start to run. Running back the way I came. By this time, the wolf is chasing after me, barking. Someone jumps in front of me. Lydia Peirce. She starts to laugh. Then she sees the wolf. She screams. I take that time to run, but I trip on a root sticking up out of the ground. I throw my hands forward to break my fall. The wolf pounces, tearing me with razor-sharp claws. They hurt so much I can hardly feel the bite.

Cod Harbor's POV:

I just heard a cannon. Cocking my head, I hear the sound of something coming towards me. I start to run. I jump up through the vines and scamper off under the trees, trying to find some source of escape. There, a small clear lake glistens as the setting sun touches it gently and turning it a glittering white-gold. I jump in, splashing everything within a 10-inch radius and the threat comes through the trees. "Esmerelda? Esme?" I hear smeone. I remember Esmerelda's from District 6. Hm, this must be Kyle. "Esme? You here?" he breaks through the trees and sees me. The grin on his face melts. "Oh, it's just you," he says, looking disappointed.

Malt Easer's POV:

That Apollo boy from 4 corners me in the maze. I want to scream but I can't. I grab a knife sticking up out of the ground and with all my strength, jump on him. He coughs. "Get-Off-ME!" he yells. I take that moment to sink the knife into his neck. "Agh!" he yells. Blood squirts out of his mouth. I leave him to die.

DEATHS:

Copper Smith

Apollo Elto

Day II

Yuki Ling's POV:

I'm in a tree. I have a knife, just in case there's any danger. It's early, very early.

Titan Siege's POV:

I have found Trillium. This has been my only acchievement so far, but I will do anthing for her. She looks up at the walls of the maze. We're well-stocked with weapons and food. I look around for any danger.

Esmerelda's POV:

I'm running. The maze is shifting. The walls are changing. Things are coming out to play with us. There are 2 trutes aready dead. I won't last long. I run up and smash into somebody. I fall, my nose is bleeding but not hurt. "Esme?" a voice asks. I jump. Then the boy's face slides into view. "KYLE!" I say. I've never been so happy to see anyone in my life. "You're here!" "I'll always be here," he says. "So, does this mean you want to form an alliance," he finally asks after a long silence. "Oh Kyle," I say, then laugh because I'm so glad I ran into him. "Come on," he says. "Let's go find shelter."

Sarah Joseph's POV:

Day 2 already and I found an ally. Sparkle Chan picks up a spear and tosses it to me. She grins as I catch it. "You know, taking on a district 13-er as an ally doesn't seem like a bad choice." I grin back, having never gotten such high praise. I finger-comb my green hair as I walk. I'm so glad I managed to get an ally. Now our plan is to find the other Careers.

Steel Plate's POV:

I have a coil of wire. Typical that they'd put a coil of wire right in front of a District 3 tribute. I do better with knives though. Stuffing the wire into my pocket, I head around the mazes and freeze. A huge gale whips through the bushes, sending me flying into a tree. Winded, I get to my feet. Dirt and debris are swirling up all over the maze. It's changine. The leafy hedges are closing on me. I start to run. At the last second, I jump out as the leaves close, shift, and part again. I find myself at the feet of Lydia Peirce.

Lydia Peirce's POV:

"Hm, how HELPLESS you seem," I sneer at the boy on the ground. He shrinks back, only a coil of wire in hi hands. "Ha! District 3 is worthless, can't work with anything besides wire!" this comment seems to fill the boy with fury and he spprings up and plucks the knife right out of my hands. "What the --" I can see him bring it down on my head. To think my death would be quick.

Shay Flax's POV:

I am with Thread. I feel safe with an ally. But the arena is never safe. Out of nowhere, Blade Johnson is thrown to the ground. The debris settles back to the ground and the changing stops. Blade coughs up a mouthful of blood, then turns to us. I notice a small gash in his shoulder, but besides that he's unscathed. "Say our goodbyes, Ditrict 8," he grins. He raises his sword and brings it down hard on Thread. Thread screams as his body is ripped apart from his legs and his cannon blasts. I take that chace to run.

Sparkle Chan's POV:

I hear something in the woods to my left. "Stick close," I warn Sarah. She doesn't argue, just steps into line beside me. I see the girl come out into the clearing. She looks lost, a little disoriented, probably because of the changing hedges. "Wha... oh my gosh," she gets out when she sees us. She says something she shouldn't have. At that instant, my knife is embedded in her skull. She staggers and collapses, but no cannon sounds. "Go finish her off," I say to Sarah. "But --" "DO it! Or I'll kill YOU too!" Sarah jumps. "Of course," she mumbles. She walks over to the girl. "Please, please Sarah," Estelle Mar chokes out. "Don't do it..." "DO IT!" I yell to Sarah. I love Estelle's long agonized scream. That's the last sound she'll ever make.

Day III

Cedar Mellark's POV:

I wake up to someone splashing water in my face. "Wake up, silly!" I hear someone laugh. "K-kajama?" I ask into the dark, misty dawn. "Oh good, you're up. I got some bread from our sponsors when I killed that boy last night." "Boy?" "Ignite Myfire," she says. "Oh," I say. "Okay. What happened?" "It was late," she says. "I found you in the maze, badly cut by that Everest boy." "Oh man, I hate him so much." "Yeah... well anyway he cut you real bad. Luckily I knew just the right herb combination to help you." "Because you're perfect," I tease. "Am NOT!" her green eyes flash malevolently and she tosses her hair back. At that moment, a silver parachute floats to the ground. Kajama unwraps it to reveal some high-tech medicine. "They'll do anything to help such a PRETTY GIRL," I tease. She punches me in the shoulder. "Shut up," she laughs, but I catch the smile and the blsh creeping up her face.

Blade Johnson's POV:

I run through the maze, looking for more tributes. Day 3 and 6 down already. I shift my spear from one hand to the other as I walk around. I see Lucky Love stumble into my path. I slam into her. She has a knife though, and is decent with it. She hits me on the head with the butt of her knife and I stumble back, disoriented. She tries to run, but I throw the spear and it fliews into her back. She collapses, and a cannon fires. It's day 3 and 7 down already.

Wolf Shade's POV:

"Looks like a storm's coming in," I tell my sister Ivory. She nods at the dark sky, the thick, steamy air. We need to find shelter," she says, her eyes flashing darkly at the storm rising. Then all at once, the sky explodes with a huge crackle. Huge bolts of white-hot plasma streak down and rain shoots out of the sky. "Run!" I shout to Ivory. "Where!?" she screams. "ANYWHERE!" I yell. But as I see her look around frantically, I see my sister get electrocuted.

Michelle Beach's POV:

This is SO not fair. I'm in the middle of the lake just when the storm hits. I frantically swim to the shore, as fast as I can, and get out. I want to run but now Im exhausted. Then a bolt of lightning shoots down, lighting up the sky and electrocuting the water. And me.

Titan Siege's POV:

"Stay with me, Trillium!" I say. "Okay," she agrees. "Yea, it would be better if I did." We stay by each others' sides when suddenly a voice comes from behind. The tribute's footfalls have been masked by the rain. "Worthless District 12. You want to see what a REAL tribute looks like?" He grabs Trillium, throws her to the ground and slices through her side. "NO!" I scream. I grab his sword and swoing wildly, managing to cut his leg. It's not that deep but he howls in pain anyway. "I'll get you for this, TITAN!" He roars at me before crashing back into the storm. "No, I'll get you for this," I say, I look down at Trillium, knowing she won't be saved. But I hold her hand until she dies.

Fall Breeze's POV:

I ran up the tree. Not the smartest decision I made in my life. When I look up, it's still stormy but the worst has passed. It's getting to be night now, so maybe, just maybe... then a flash of light streaks out of the sky at my tree. This is no ordinary lightning. It's Gamemaker lightning. I can't jump. I can't climb up or down. I fall. Then the burning tree smashes down on me and the last thing I feel is pain.

Day IV

Eris Chrome's POV:

I look over my shoulder as I hear the sound of a breaking branch. "We shouldn't be here Kyle," a girl says into the darkness. "Relex Esme. It's..." he has no time to say the last word. I hurl a knife into the trees and ear the spattering noise as it comes through his back.

Esmerelda's POV:

"NO!" I scream. "NO! NO! KYLE!" I whip out a knife and throw it into Eris Chrome's skull. She staggers backward. A few minutes later, I hear her cannon. I drop to my knees next to Kyle. "Oh Kyle," I say. "Don't worry about me, Esme," he says. "You need to take care now." He grins. A tear slides down my cheek. "You too," I say. "Es, you made the last few days the best of my life. Please be safe." "I will," I say. "Will win for you." "Bye Esme," he says. The his cannon fires. "Bye Kyle," I say. "I love you."

It feels like my heart exploded. Tears stream down my cheeks and I sink to my knees, unable to stand. I feel like I have no strength left.

"I always needed time on my own
I never thought I'd need you there when I cried
And the days feel like years when I'm alone
And the bed where you lie
Is made up on your side

When you walk away
I count the steps that you take
Do you see how much I need you right now?

When you're gone
The pieces of my heart are missing you
When you're gone
The face I came to know is missing too
When you're gone
The words I need to hear to always get me through the day
And make it okay
I miss you

I've never felt this way before
Everything that I do
Reminds me of you
And the clothes you left
They lie on the floor
And they smell just like you
I love the things that you do

When you walk away
I count the steps that you take
Do you see how much I need you right now?

When you're gone
The pieces of my heart are missing you
When you're gone
The face I came to know is missing too
When you're gone
The words I need to hear to always get me through the day
And make it ok
I miss you

We were made for each other
Out here forever
I know we were
Yeah, yeah

And all I ever wanted was for you to know
Everything I do I give my heart and soul
I can hardly breathe I need to feel you here with me
Yeah

When you're gone
The pieces of my heart are missing you
When you're gone
The face I came to know is missing too
When you're gone
The words I need to hear will always get me through the day
And make it ok
I miss you."

Then when I finish singing I run out of the clearing, away from Eris, away from Kyle. A silver parachute falls from the sky and lands in my hand. It's small, but I unwrap it to find a locket with the words, "I will always be with you" engraved in it. Inside is a picture of me and on the other side is a picture of Kyle. I close it and clasp the chain around my neck. "Thank you, District 6," I say because I know it came from them. To give me strength, to reind me Kyle will never truly be gone.

Malco Crest's POV:

I turn another corner and see something I'd rather not have seen. Blade Johnson. He's got blood on his sword from a fresh kill and I'm scared that he got Heather. But no, he lets someone else's body slip to the ground. Wave Oceanus. I am full of fear now. I start to run, but leaves crunch under my feet, directing the attention of my bitter rival. "What a pleasant surprise," he laughs as he pulls out his sword. "No!" I want to say. But he brings it down hard and fast on my neck.

Artemis Elto's POV:

I let the boy fall and then pull the arrow from his throat. I laugh. District 1 acts like they're so important, but they'll NEVER know how to be in a Games. District 4 knows how to fend for themselves. We're much better. I hear a noise and run back through the trees. I peek out and almost laugh out loud. The girls from 1 and 13 are trying to save Marvel Dismond in vain. Only one of the Careers is actually worth it, and that's Blade. The girl from 13 sees me. She tries to warn the other, but my arrow tip is already sinking into Sparkle's stomach.

Venus Chrome's POV:

My sister is dead. It was only a matter of time before one of the Chrome sibings died. I scan the woods with my bow in hand. I'm not brilliant with my bow but good enough and when I look around I see someone coming towrds me. They thrust out a knife. Everest Sateer accopanied by Blade Johnson. "You could be useful," Blade grins. "Can you shoot?" In response I aim the bow at Everest and shoot him in the heart. "In that case, welcome aboard," Blade says. He kicks the dying boy. "Come back with me. I have food." I follow the Career throgh the maze, until we get to a small rope.

Day V:

Back in the Capitol:

"Nothing has happened so far," complains vice president Eliza Smyth. "Yes, we need to liven things up a little," the head Gamemaker puts in. "Let's send in another storm!" "No!" Paylor shouts this proposal down. "We need to gather them all together and watch them take blood personally. We get a better audience that way." "What should we do?" Smyth asks. For a while, no one can come up with an idea. Then the Head Gamemaker shouts: "I know!"

Day V:

Cedar Mellark's POV:

"Kajama," I say when she gets back from early hunting, "It's your turn for guard." She groans. "What if I know a nice boy named Cedar who will be more than willing to do it for me?" she whines. "You got me," I sigh, stepping aside to let her pass. She deposits the things she collected in the corner, but I don't look at them. Instead I sigh and stare out the cave.

Kajama Odair's POV:

I wake up to a scream. Cedar is there, and so is Harpy Evermist, from 2. Cedar brings a knife down on her arm but she dodges neatly and smacks him in the face with her hand. He falls to the ground, looking pretty dizzy and then tries to get up but just falls back down. Harpy laughs and then the next motion makes me sick. In one swift slice, Harpy cuts Cedar's head off. His blood splashes my cheek as his cannon fires. "Oh my god," I get out. Quick as lightning I lunge at Harpy and grab her sword, twisting her arm back and stabbing her right in the side so hard the blade shatters. Then she falls, and I fall with her. Nausea and pain have brought me to my knees. The pain of seeing him die. I can't take it. I stumble to the edge of the trees that formed a sort of cave above us. I don't make it though. Without warning, I puke something awful right there in the woods, glad my hair is in a ponytail down my back. Harpy's cannon fires. I see a silver sponsor gift floating down towards me. I pick it up, and take off the parachute. It's medicine, and a new knife. I sigh and whisper, "Thank you." After the worst of last night's dinner is up, I gulp down the medicine and pick up the blade. Ready to fight.

Cod Harbor's POV:

I look out at the clear, shimmering lake. Strange they would put a lake in a maze. It as to be here for a reason, though. I jump in, letting the cool water splash over my hot body. Instant relief. Then suddenly the pond gets warmer. I wonder what could make a change occur so quickly in the temperature. Then I see the fire. It's not normal fire. It's too uniform -- the front line is cutting through the paths but not burning the hedge walls. The progression of it is too fast. And then some of it starts to burn my face. I hear a cannon through the firey haze. The searing pain is too much. I stumble back into the lake and start to run. The lake does little to refresh me this time. Moments later, it dries up. I stumble forward and run as fast as I can to a clearing. Instantly the fire evaporates. And I am face-to-face with the remaining 35 tributes.

Artemis Elto's POV:

For one econd, all is dark. Then the sky starts to glow and words pop out. BLOOD WILL FALL. The message in the sky is written in blood. The blood of the dead tributes. I remember hearing a cannon somewhere in the fire. I wonder how that last one died. Probably just didn't get away fast enough. I have no more time to ponder this as Blade Johnson utters a firece battle cry and the fighting explodes in the clearing. I slash, screaming and shoutng, not sure who I slay with my arrows. More are struck down, most of the deaths by Blade and Kajama. Blake Carson falls at Blade's sword. Lexi Strong is killed by Kajama. Someone I haven't seen the entire games, who no one has seen until now, sneaks up behind me. And Iridessa Black smiles as she digs the knife into my back.

Sutton Yate's POV:

Still more tributes die. My District partner River, the girl from 5, Amanda. Now it's less than 24 tributes. All gathered together, like this is the beginning of a Games with only 24 of us. But no... 25 of us already have died, our bodies cleared out and shipped back to our Districts. Only the strongest can remain now. And I know that things are about to turn deadly. Right now.

Part II

TNT Bomb's POV:

Esmerelda smashes into the ground by my feet. For a moment she doesn't move. Then as she pulls herself to her feet, the killer smashes through the brush. In his usual manner, he acts surprised to see us and smiles at Esmerelda as if she was nothing more than an old friend. "Well, look what we have here," he says. I see he's hiding something behind his back. Then he throws it - her- to the ground. Venus stares up with her cold, dead eyes, a shocked look on her face. A rope hangs from around her neck. Blood pours from her side. Blade looks up at me and Esmerelda. "Confused? Venus was stupid enough to follow me. When she found out I killed her sister she threatened me. Threatened to tell you. So of course I had to hang her." "But then why.... did you do that if... if you were just going to tell us yourself?" I ask. "Oh various reasons," says Blade. I don't know what he's talking about. But he's trying to get Esmerelda angry enough to try to kill him. Then he'll kill her.

Blade Johnson's POV:

I have no idea what I'm talking about, but I have them in control. I start off with something believable. "Oh yes... I organized the murder of... what's his face? Kyle? Well anyway... yeah... I sent Eris after you and Kyle because I knew if she killed one of you, the other onme of you would kill her. There's 2 obstacles down. Then Venus came with me, and of course, I took the oportunity to hang this stupid girl." Esmerelda glares at me, tears burning in her eyes. She tries to lunge at me, but that Titan boy grabs her and throws her back into the woods. At least I have someone to kill. I swing my sword down on his head.

Bright Streak's POV:

I turn another corner, hoping it's safe. They're going to drag us together again, I just know it. Sure enough, a loud voice blares over the speakers: "ATTENTION ALL REMAINING PLAYERS... NOW IT IS TIME TO REWARD THESE STRONG PARTICIPANTS BY GIVING THEM SOMETHING THEY ABSOLUTELY CANNOT SURVIVE THESE GAMES WITHOUT. IT WILL BE LOCATED AT THE SAME PLACE AS THE LAST MEGABATTLE. GOOD LUCK, TRIBUTES."

So this means I have to get over to the place they're talking about. No doubt I'm going to face mutts and tributes and maybe - god forbid- some horrible Gamemaker weapon. But I have to go anyway. While I'm thinking about what to do, I see some more tributes cutting through the hedges. My stomach plummets at the sight of Blade. It's now or never. I need to get there first. I head off in that direction. Cutting through the last of the trees....

I'm the last one here.

Cod Harbor's POV:

The fighting breaks out, and it's bloody and awful and Blade is a demon the whole time. Again and again, death screams ring in my ears. I won't sleep tonight. No one has mercy. The clearing is spattered with blood, its green grass replaced by a monstrous red sea. Then Blade shoves me. I am knocked off my feet and fly 3 feet before lnding on my butt. Then I look up, dizzy and disoriented, to see a green bag with a number 4 on it. Grabbing it, I pick myself up. I get about as far as the trees before I have to puke so I sit down at a distance away from the fighting and sit down. It's going to be a long night.

Part III The Finality of it all: 10 Tributes... ? Victors... Who will win?

Esmerelda's POV:

That comment about Kyle has filled me with fury, and I have to win. Me, kill Blade. I have to. Avenge Kyle. Win.

Kajama Odair's POV:

Only the strongest can live now; Blade has proved that. I slash through the trees, bearing down on that girl from 5 and killing her in one quick slash of my sword. At this point of the Games, there is no mercy. No holding back. No letting others go. Because the girl didn't let Cedar go, I won't let anyone go.

Steel Plate's POV:

I haven't been seen by anyone the entire Games. Like I could ever DREAM of winning -- what am I? I'm a boy from District 3. But as I turn a corner, my eyes widen. There's the center of the maze. I can't believe my eyes. A huge crystal with a white-blue glow sprouts from the ground."This is it," I say. I walk towards the center. I can stop this. I can get us all back home. Suddenly a giant mutt bursts out of the trees. I scream and run forward towards the crystal. Then the wolf-mutt grabs my leg up in its teeth. I stab downward with my knife, right at its throat. It collapses. My legs are pinned under its body. I reach out and try to touch the crystal just inches away from my fingertips. It's just out of my reach. I remember the rule: "No one can touch the crystal except the person who reaches the middle first. If they die, another person has to touch it." I am filled with fear. There are 2 options: Touch it or die.

Blade Johnson's POV:

I lunge forward and blood spurts from the boy's head. He was from District 11. Surprising he got this far already. I jump at the girl from 12. She sidesteps and I go barreling into a tree. I'm a little dizzy when I stand up, and when I cough, there's blood. The girl from 13 lunges forward and hits me in the back, but I retaliate, grabbing her and spinning her around. I let go and she flies into a tree, screaming and flailing. She hits and slides the remaining 2 feet down to the ground where she lies bloody and broken. My head swings to the side. But it's only Titun Siege, readying his sword to deliver my deathblow. I knock him aside. His sword cuts me in the leg and I howl with pain. Then I see something whizzing towards me. As the knife lodges in my skull, I throw my sword. I hear it hit someone, but can't see who it is. Until Shay Flax falls right beside me.

Iridessa Black's POV:

I run away from the battle area and whip around a corner. I hear moaning up ahead. Whoever's up there must not be very strong -- I'm trying to decide whether to fight or flight when I see it -- a blueish glow up ahead. Intrigued, I follow the light. Then I find myself facing a giant crystal. And I've reached it -- the middle of the maze! Then I see someone lying there. Steel Plate's face is pale, his hair plastered to his forhead with sweat. "Help Iridessa!" he moans. I don't want to help. I want to run away. But more than anything, I want to get out of here. So I try to pry the mutt's jaws open, but they won't budge. "Unh -- I can't! Steel!" "You can't?" Steel gasps, a rising terror in his voice. The screams of the other battling tributes are getting closer. Through the darkness, I can see pairs of eyes coming into view. "Steel! We have to hurry!" I whisper. "I know!" he whispers back. I look over my shoulder. Fangs glint in the moonlight. "Come ON!" I say. "I can't!" Then suddenly I get an idea. "Okay," I say. "Hold my hand. "What?!" "Hold my hand!" "OKAY!" he grabs my hand and squeezes. I reach out and slap the crystal. It goes dark. "What happened?" Steel gasps. "Nothing happened!" I say. As soon as the words are out of my mouth, the crystal explodes and a ferocious wind sweeps me off my feet. I fly backward into the wall of the maze. Then I am aware of the maze being lowered back into the ground. I am too winded to speak, and just sit there. That is, until the screaming starts, and then I'm screaming also. The faces of the others flash before my eyes and the maze is being lowered into the ground. I scream until I hear voices. The others stop, so do I. WE are all in the middle of the maze, slumped on the ground, but alive. "CONGRATULATIONS!" Our hands fly to our ears as the loudspeaker blares to life. "IT SEEMS AS IF ONE OF OUR TRIBUTES HAS REACHED THE MIDDLE. SO THE REMAINING TRIBUTES ARE WINNERS; I GIVE YOU... STEEL PLATE! IRIDESSA BLACK! KAJAMA ODAIR! MALT EASER! SATURN CHROME! GAVIN OCTAVIN! AND ESMERELDA.... CONGRATULATIOS!!!!!"

Day VI ~ The Aftermath

Gavin Octavin's POV:

We're all in the tribute train again. I sit between Steel and Esmerelda, watching the rerun of our Games. At one point, Esmerelda bursts into tears and runs out of the room. "I think that's when her boyfriend died," Kajama says to me, which brings a loud wail of "Noooo kyyyle!" from the other room. We get to the part where Iridessa slaps the crystal and it explodes. She falls backward -- then on the screen we see everyone screaming. Kajama. Saturn. Steel. Esmerelda. We're all screaming. Then an overhead shot of the maze, then... nothing.

We are all shaken as we go to bed that night.

Saturn Chrome's POV:

Wow, I just won. I can't believe it, out of all 48 tributes... but I was always the strongest... no, I wasn't. Even though I killed some, I just can't admit to myself that I was the strongest. But I'm glad I won.

Iridessa Black's POV:

I climb out on the roof to find Steel. "Hey," he says. And now I realize, he's the one person in the world who I want to talk to. I think this will be the first conversation I've had since Jayson. "Thanks so much," he says. "Um, no problem," I reply. "Don't mention it." "No, I really mean it. Without you, I wouldn't be here." "Well I'm glad you're here," I say. This makes him smile. I finger the jay charm on my necklace. "Well, I think we have to go to bed," he says. "Night Iridessa." "Goodnight," I say. Then we walk down opposite sides of the staircase.

Kajama Odair's POV:

A victor of a victor's child. Mom must be really proud of me. I smile as I turn off the light, glad I won.

Esmerelda's POV:

I can't keep Kyle off my mind. It isn't fair, and I can't stop crying. WHY does there have to be a Games? WHY do we have to die? I feel hollow and tears slide down my pale face. Thinking about him makes me want to fall down and never get up.

Then I remember the locket. I read the words once again.

"You're not alone, together we stand
I'll be by your side, you know I'll take your hand
When it gets cold and it feels like the end
There's no place to go, you know I won't give in
No, I won't give in

Keep holding on
'Cause you know we'll make it through, we'll make it through
Just stay strong
'Cause you know I'm here for you, I'm here for you

There's nothing you could say, nothing you could do
There's no other way when it comes to the truth
So keep holding on
'Cause you know we'll make it through, we'll make it through

So far away, I wish you were here
Before it's too late this could all disappear
Before the door's closed and it comes to an end
With you by my side I will fight and defend
I'll fight and defend, yeah, yeah

Keep holding on
'Cause you know we'll make it through, we'll make it through
Just stay strong
'Cause you know I'm here for you, I'm here for you
[From: http://www.elyrics.net/read/a/avril-lavigne-lyrics/keep-holding-on-lyrics.html]

There's nothing you could say, nothing you could do
There's no other way when it comes to the truth
So keep holding on
'Cause you know we'll make it through, we'll make it through

Hear me when I say when I say, I believe
Nothing's gonna change, nothing's gonna change destiny
Whatever's meant to be will work out perfectly
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Keep holding on
'Cause you know we'll make it through, we'll make it through
Just stay strong
'Cause you know I'm here for you, I'm here for you

There's nothing you could say, nothing you could do
There's no other way when it comes to the truth
So keep holding on
'Cause you know we'll make it through, we'll make it through

Keep holding on
Keep holding on

There's nothing you could say, nothing you could do
There's no other way when it comes to the truth
So keep holding on
'Cause you know we'll make it through, we'll make it through..."
