Reaping

I walked alone, to the reaping of the 76th Hunger Games. Everything before was just a hazy blur. My mother was back at the house, doing late chores. I was glad that she wouldn't be here, because I was about to do something very stupid.

Effie walked up to the mic and two men put down the bowls of names. Effie was wearing a dress that represented paints, golden flowing hair, a pink ballgown dress with paint splatters on it, and to top it off, a dried paintbrush in her hair. "Happy Hunger Games! And may the odds be ever in your favor." I mouthed out every word she said in my head. I took a deep breath. Effie reached her hand into the female bowl. I was thinking, I wouldn't get picked. The minority of possible tributes are 18. But...I was the Mockingjay. I am the Mockingjay. I need to show people that I care. After that, my mind went blank. Effie pulled out the name and read, "Velvet Greenlaw."

Many gasps were heard, and older siblings clapped their hands over littler children, because I've heard that Velvet was bad news. She is a 15-year-old who once tried to break into the Capitol, and somehow survived. She also distorted the story by telling everyone that she killed one or two Peacekeepers. This made her a target. And now was her time...or was it? I didn't know who she was, but I am still the Mockingjay. Velvet doesn't deserve this...

My face turns pale as I scream, "I volunteer as tribute!" Effie's eyes widened as more people gasped and removed their cold hands from children's ears. I walk up slowly, but in front of Velvet. Velvet places her hand on my shoulder. I can only make out, "Thank you." Then she walks off. I start off to Effie. Effie says a little prayer in her head for me. I can tell, because she closes her painted eyelashes and cups her hands into a prayer. Then, for the first time ever, Effie lets me pick the male tribute from District 12. I reach my hand into the bowl and pick out a name. As I open it, I tear up, and the name is stained with my tears. The last name was toast, but I could read the first name. Although I never got to read it, Effie takes it from me, and recognizes the name. There was only one person in District 12 with this first name. "Ivo Portshore."

At this, no sounds are heard. It seemed like Effie was the only one who knew this boy. I looked at Peeta, in the back of the crowd. My eyes told him to volunteer, buy his eyes told me otherwise. Ivo walked up to me. He looked 16, but he was my age. Ivo greeted me silently, and I greeted him back. Effie told me to get on the other side of her and hold her hand. Then, she told Ivo to hold her hand. She lifted the hands up and the crowd did the three-finger symbol. Effie did not smile nor frown as she said, "Our tributes for the 76th Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen and Ivo Portshore."

Tribute Parade

The smoke again. I remember getting onto the chariots for the parade. What was our theme? I looked at Ivo, and he was wearing a costume representing ice. Ice? But I was the girl on fire! As the people saw me, and I felt a tingling feeling up my spine, I knew what I was wearing. One look at my dress confirmed it all. I was in a golden dress, with the flames coming out of the dress. The crowd cheered for me, but when I first heard it, I couldn't help but chuckle a little, because I thought they were saying, "Cactus! Cactus!"

Training Center

Then, we were taken into the training center. It seemed like years before we got there. It felt just like before the reaping. It's almost like someone is wiping my memory. There, I learned the tributes, except for 5 and 10, because I consider their tributes unexperienced. First, I learn the Careers. District 1 is Coin and Crescent. I thought their names were even more ridiculous than my past four rivals from District 1, Marvel and Glimmer, and Gloss and Cashmere. District 1 people had "glamorous names" if you will. I tried talking to them, and we had a lot in common, but they seemed more fierce than any Career I'd ever seen. Their skill was bow and arrows, so we were even. The District 2 Careers were Jago and Jessidy. They also seemed more fierce than my District 2 competetors, Cato and Clove, and Brutus and Enobaria. Jago and Jessidy did not talk to me at all. So much for being a Career.

District 3 was very different. Gunnar, the male tribute, seemed to be watching me the entire time. He could not talk, but his partner, Mizar, talked to me, and we decided to be allies. Gunnar and Mizar took me to their allies from District 4, Paulo and Autumn. They were very skilled in knife throwing and climbing. They were very pleased that Ivo and I were their allies as well as Gunnar and Mizar. Ivo...where was he? I searched for them, and he was off doing camoflauge with the District 6 tributes, the morphlings.

District 7 had one Career tribute. Maybe I could still have a chance. Robby, the male tribute, took one took at me and made the "slice your throat" sign to me. Trembling a bit, I turned to the District 7 Career, Yun-Yun. Yun-Yun walked up to Robby and started fighting him as the Careers cheered her on. District 8 tributes were the most timid and scared tributes I've ever seen in my life: Crow and Yujoy. I could overhear them wanting to step off of the platforms when the game begins so they would already be dead.

Skipping 9, I walked over to the tributes from 11, as I passed the District 10 tributes. They seemed nice, but very brutal: Hugh and Hazel. I wanted them as an ally. And finally, District 11 saw me walk over as they were practicing swordfighting. I learned their names, Nastasi and Bowen. Bowen was 15, and what hurt me the most was that Nastasi was 12. Just like...Rue. I wanted them as an ally as well. Then, training finished. I reread the list of allies in my head: Gunnar and Mizar, Paulo and Autumn, Hugh and Hazel, and Bowen and Nastasi. Including Ivo, I would have nine allies. That would make us a group of 10 out of 24 people.

After waiting a long time, it was my turn to show the judges what I can do. Ivo walked out of that room with a small grin on his face. I walked inside, and I saw that most of the place was burning. I guess he built a bomb. How symbolistic, I am still the girl on...fire. I wasn't sure what to do, even after thinking about it for a long time. I heard, "Ms. Everdeen." Then, I knew what to do. I brought up some reflective mirrors, the kinds that when you throw something at it, it bounces like if it was a lazer pointer. I took out some berries, smashed them, and drew dots on the mirrors. It had to be in specific places. After using 15 mirrors, I took out a plastic dummy. I wrote a name on it, and placed it far away from me. The name was covered up with cloth. The judges were intrigued. I took two steps back, and I pointed my arrow at the dot on the first mirror. I took a deep breath, and let it fly. It bounced off the dots, one by one. The judges gasped. As my arrow was two dots away from hitting the dummy, I became nervous of what the judges would think of the name. As the arrow flew at the dummy, the cloth fell, hit his heart, and revealed his name.

The judges gasped, and one fainted. The name was President Snow.

Later that day, with Haymitch and Ivo, we learned our scores. The Careers got high scores. Everyone else, medium. Ivo got a 9, and I got a 12. We seemed like the perfect team.

The 76th Hunger Games: Bloodbath, Day 1

Then, Haymitch walked me up to my tube, and Effie did the same to Ivo. I pointed to the door from where we entered, to make Haymitch aware if something happened. Haymitch looked up at me as the tube was rising. The last thing I saw was Haymitch doing the three-finger symbol. No... I thought. As the sun was getting hotter, I saw too many climates.

The climates were meant to represent the four seasons. I was in the winter section. Who knew what was deeper into the seasons? Ice monsters? Mole mutts? Poisoned flowers? Droughts? I couldn't find Ivo, until I saw Nastasi point to the summer section, and I saw him. "Let the 76th Hunger Games begin. 50, 49, 48, 47, 46..."

Somehow, Crow and Yujoy were beside each other. They looked at one another, and when the clock counted down to 26, they jumped, Crow going first. No! my mind was saying. Crow and Yujoy, the tributes from District 8, were dead. 23 left. 22 left. "21, 20, 19, 18, 17..." I tripped and almost went off the platform. I panicked as I regained my balance. As the clock went to 10, I looked at the ground. It was a frozen lake. Fall's ground was covered in a sticky sap. Spring's was covered in stones, and summer's had actual flowing lava. I screamed without thinking, "IVO!"

"2, 1." GONGGG!

I ran to the Cornucopia and witnessed the third death: Crescent killed the District 5 Male. Then the Careers were going crazy: Coin killed the District 9 Female, Jago killed the District 5 Female, and Jessidy killed the District 9 Male. 5, 8, and 10 were all gone. That makes it 18. I grabbed a spear and a bow. There were 12 arrows left, and I took them. Another cannon sounded: the female morphling killed by Yun-Yun.

I found Ivo and the other 8 tributes, and we left in the safest season possible: spring. It seemed like people were already there. I found that Crescent had followed us to spring, and she killed Bowen. With ease, Ivo and I attacked her. She was vicious, and severely injured me, but Ivo killed her. Maybe Ivo wasn't so bad after all.

One more cannon: Male morphling. I saw  All the remaining Careers were walking away from the dead body. We hid behind a large rock as they went to summer: possibly the most dangerous season. Summer was right next to us. We had to get to winter to keep everyone safe.

Frightening thoughts went through my head as I went over the list of remaining tributes: Clove getting smashed to death. Cato getting eaten by wolves. My sister getting bombed. Cinna before the 3rd Quarter Quell. Mags' sacrifice. Finnick...eaten by lizard mutts.

So Coin, Jago and Jessidy, Gunnar and Mizar, Paulo and Autumn, Robby and Yun-Yun, Hugh and Hazel, Nastasi, Ivo and I were left. Only 14. The four Careers were outnumbered by our team of 9. If the Careers had a name, we should too. As we were throwing out ideas thoughtlessly, Gunnar signed something to Mizar. She said that he wanted it to be called, "The Courses." I liked that, because the Careers were about to get served.

Yun-Yun met up with Robby at the Cornucopia. Robby begged her to be a Career. Yun-Yun snickered. "You're not tough enough, noodle-arms." Then they both drew their swords. Robby's life was at stake. He either had to kill his tribute partner, or she kill him. I watched as Gunnar kissed me on the cheek and ran over to help Robby. Gunnar took out his axe and blocked Yun-Yun's sword. She stopped attacking Robby, and had a new opponent. Gunnar thrusted back into Mizar's arms, but thankfully, he was still alive. Mizar felt his heartbeat. She piped up, "His life. By a thread." My eyes got misty as Mizar felt Gunnar's heartbeat, and he closed his eyes. I turned to watch the District 7 battle, and Robby stuck his sword through Yun-Yun's body. A cannon. That either ment Yun-Yun died or Gunnar died. Mizar looked up at me and smiled with relief. Gunnar was still alive.

No one could not carry Gunnar's bleeding body. We could not have two or more people hold him, or else the Courses could not defend themselves. That's...selfish. It can't happen. I picked up his heavy body and we walked deeper into the summer section. We found a safe cave as we all went to sleep. Half of the people dead in one day. I thought it out as my eyes grew heavy.

Throughout the night, I heard a cannon. I woke up, and the Courses were still sleeping. Another cannon. I checked to see if everyone was breathing. Nine more cannons. That meant that I won the 76th Hunger Games. But Ivo, and Nastasi...Mizar...Robby. I started to tear up, until I heard one more cannon. That's impossible! That would mean everyone would have been dead. Including me. As my fear grew...more cannon sounds were near. They were getting louder. Caeser, Effie, Haymitch, and ghosts of Rue, Mags, Finnick, Wiress and Prim appeared. They were reaching out for me. Caeser, Effie, and Haymitch's skin were melting, until they were covered in blood. The ghosts faded away. Then the cave entrace closed by avalanche rocks. And the cave was smaller. And smaller. And I was dead...for good.

Until I woke up.

I was so frightened by the nightmare that I checked everyone's heartbeat...for Mizar. She, and the rest of the Courses were safe and sound. Autumn and Hazel were snoring with deep, heavy breaths. Finally, I checked Gunnar. As my hand felt nothing, I realized that one of the cannons I heard while sleeping...were real. I woke Mizar up and told her the news. She started crying, her tears like a mirror, reflecting the rising sun. A few minutes later, the other Courses woke up. All but one. They knew what had happened without saying a word.

The 76th Hunger Games: Day 2

As we were ready to get hunting for Careers again, we decided to look for food and water first. Hugh and Hazel wanted to hunt down birds, squirrels, berries, and fish. The rest of us went looking for water. First, we checked the winter section of the Cornucopia. Paulo broke the ice and scooped up some water in his hands. He spat it out, realizing that the water had blood in it. Choking, I gave him the Heimlich, and he was okay. Hugh and Hazel came back like lightning. They found everything they needed: bird and squirrel meat, berries, fish, and a sweet type of edible leaf that tasted like lemons.

We dug in. Who needs the Cornucopia Feast when you have anything you need? Of course, I started with the fish. Ivo, Nastasi, Paulo, and Autumn got the meats. Mizar got the leaves. Hugh grabbed some berries and ate them, as Hazel was poised to. Then, Hugh's face started sweating. His face was turning a red-blue. Then, he fell over and died. Hazel dropped the berries. I looked at the berries, and I said one word, "Nightlock."

Hazel and I made a truce to never eat berries in the Games again. I could see Hazel saying a prayer, as the cannon finished it off. But I heard another one. Was this one real? I listened, no more cannons. Yes, that was real. But who died? It was one of four people: Coin, Jago, Jessidy, and Robby. Then, I saw the Careers laughing at a large hole in the ice. That meant...Robby drowned. I couldn't believe how mean and vicious Coin, Jago and Jessidy are. And then I was thinking. They were more vicious and more mean than anyone I've ever fought. Cato, Clove, Gloss, Cashmere, Enobaria, Brutus. Snow. This was her most brutal Hunger Games. More challenging than 74. More intense than 75. This was like the boss battle of a video game, except while fighting, we Courses must protect each other.

Then the sky was getting dark. It looked like rain. It started hailing and sleeting. The raindrops were bigger, big enough to drown a bug. We ran into summer. There was lava everywhere, and the ground was broken like an earthquake. I took Nastasi's hand as we jumped over the flowing lava. We got hit by hail every second, which knocked us out a little bit more every hit. And that's when Autumn touched the lava. She screamed with agony, as her body was burning and flowing down into the lava. If I'm right, Ivo and I are the only pair left along with 2.

We got tired from the poison snow. We fell asleep again, as I wrote on a large leaf who died.

Coin, Jago, Jessidy. The 3 remaining enemies. Those 3 versus the Courses: Mizar, Paulo, Hazel, Nastasi, Ivo and myself. Only 9 people left. I dozed off to sleep, and dreamt of the 74th Hunger Games. Only I wasn't there.

In my dream, Clove killed Rue, so Thresh killed her, and Cato killed him. Then it was just Peeta and Cato. Without me shooting that arrow into Cato's arm, Peeta would have choked to death.

Then, in the 75th Hunger Games, Cato volunteered for Gloss. He killed all of my allies: Beetee and Wiress, Finnick and Mags, Johanna, Seeder, Cecelia, Woof...they weren't even my allies.

The 76th Hunger Games: Feast, Day 3

I woke up, but not as scared as yesterday's wake-up call. I heard a voice booming above my head. "Attention, tributes." It was the Capitol. I woke everyone else up. The voice went on, "Today, we will be having a feast at the Cornucopia. There will be food and supplies there. If you choose not to come, then the supplies will be burnt. You have 3 hours to come. Happy Hunger Games, and may the odds be ever in your favor."

We all decided to go. With all six of us, there would be enough supplies to last us a week. As we neared the Cornucopia, we saw the bags labeled, "1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 10, 11, and 12." I wondered why there was an 8 there, because Crow and Yujoy were the first ones to die. I checked for Careers, and I signaled for Nastasi and Ivo to come with me and grab our bags. I grabbed Nastasi's hand, and we ran as fast as we could. Avoiding the lava, we ran into spring, for the stones would help us get to a higher place. I grabbed the 12 bag, and Nastasi grabbed her bag. Ivo insisted to stay so if the Careers decided to come again, he could fight them off.

I ran Nastasi back to the Courses and I stayed with her. Then, Mizar, Paulo, and Hazel ran for the bags. I saw Jago in the corner of my eye, but if I yelled, he would see me and Nastasi. So, when they grabbed their bags and ran back, I gestured for them to run, and pointed towards him. Now, Jago was chasing them. Before he could lay a hand on Hazel, an arrow was shot in his back. He fell down, and blood poured out of his body. I looked over to the Cornucopia. Ivo had just let go of an arrow. He went back to fight Careers, and I saw a blur. The only thing I saw clearly was Coin's camoflauge knife.

Then, he looked back and ran behind the Cornucopia. I heard screaming and yelling, but Paulo started talking. He said, "Do you think that the Capitol put the 8 bag there on purpose?" That got me thinking. Maybe it was to help. Paulo ran off to the bag before I said, Stop!" He laid his hands on the bag, and it started beeping. The bag had a hand recognition sensor. The bag exploded, starting up several landmines. Only two words went through my head as we all ran away. Crow. Yujoy. The landmines were getting closer, and as we entered fall, we were safe. A cannon finished off the final landmine.

District 4: Paulo and Autumn...gone.

I only have Mizar, Hazel, Nastasi, and Ivo. Ivo...where was he? He was fighting Careers...he wouldn't stand a chance alone. But thinking like a madman, I decided to let Ivo have at them.

After the Feast ended, the sun shone brighter than ever. The ice in winter began to melt. The snow powedered on top of the ice fell down in the water. Lucky for all tributes, everyone else was in autumn and the Cornucopia. Autumn...I don't want to call it fall anymore. For District 4.

In autumn, we found a small, hidden beach with maple trees lining it. We walked over to it, and drank from the water. Nastasi drank some water close to shore, and got sand in her mouth. She spat it out, and we all laughed. Laughter...what a good feeling for a deadly situation. Then something happened.

The waves stilled. The maple trees stopped swaying. Even the wind ceased. I looked behind us, and there were crab mutts walking towards us. With their sharp claws, they cut down the trees, and they poured out a sticky sap. We were trapped. We got closer to the beach, and the mutts got even more scarier with every step back. Finally, we all touched water. Our supplies were stuck in the sap. Mizar rushed to get them. It was hopeless. The crabs got her.

District 3: Gunnar and Mizar...gone.

Until...

Coin and Jessidy appeared. Coin shot arrows at the crabs, and Jessidy sliced them open with a blade. Then, we stared at each other. They didn't look like they wanted to fight us, so they dropped their weapons. Hazel walked up to Jessidy. "Thank you," she whispered. Then, Hazel showed her soft side and held out her hands for a hug. Jessidy couldn't resist. They hugged.

I thought to myself, I guess that means the Careers and Courses are one team now. But I was so wrong. Hazel looked at Nastasi, and they both nodded. Nastasi threw a pretty medium sized rock at Coin. It hit his head, and he fell over in a daze. Jessidy distracted, Hazel punched her in the ribs, then chest. Weak and frail, Jessidy was thrusted to the ground. Hazel grabbed her feet and started pulling her towards the water. Clueless what was going on, I ran over to grab our supplies. I swiped the mace. I was poised to hit Coin, but didn't, so he would have nowhere to go, but away.

Jessidy was grabbing onto the soft sand, covered in blood from the mutts. Hazel pulled harder, until Jessidy's shoulders went underwater. Jessidy tried to get up, but Hazel's foot made sure that she didn't. Then, Hazel pushed Jessidy's head underwater for about half a minute. After that, Hazel walked away. Jessidy had drowned.

District 2: Jago and Jessidy, gone.

Next order of business: Coin. He was surrounded now. He got up, and begged for mercy. He put his hands up, and slowly walked toward our supplies. He quickly grabbed the rest of our supplies: six bows, two blades, an axe, and two of the sweet leaves that Hugh and Hazel found.

He took his bow, and pointed the arrow at Hazel. As I became more scared, he moved the arrow towards Nastasi. Finally, it was my turn. He shouted, "Jessidy was the only one I had left! I don't have a family anymore! I don't have any friends! No one even volunteered for me at the Reaping! Do you want to know why I'm so vicious? Well, there you have it! I'm from a broken home! But you had to kill Jessidy just because she's a Career! Do you know what I was going to do if we were the only ones left? I thought we could start a family! Get any closer, and I'll shoot!"

We all were shocked. Without a choice, we dropped our weapons and put our hands behind our head.

Coin snickered. "Thought so." He left, but came back and said, "Oh yeah, and Katniss. If there's anyone who needs to be weeping by someone's side, Ivo-te for you. See you in hell." Coin left while he twiddled with his arrow. He pretended to throw it at us, and laughed. Then, he disappeared into the trees.

Nastasi was the only one who got the joke. She said, "Ivo-te for you? Don't you get it? Ivo! He's in trouble!"

Before I could move a muscle, the borders between seasons broke apart and up rose four unbreakable walls that reached up to the force field. A voice said, "Welcome, final tributes, to the event of the 76th Hunger Games. To survive this event, you must find a way to break the wall that leads to the Cornucopia. In each season, there is a hint somewhere. But be careful, you only have 48 hours to solve this puzzle, or else the walls will fall, and crush the remaining tributes inside the seasons. Good luck."

Hazel, Nastasi and I were trapped in autumn. I'll bet Coin was fast enough to get to summer before we did. If he got to winter and solved the event, he would fall in the water around the Cornucopia, from the ice melting.

Who knows where Ivo was...

We decided to look at the very edge of autumn. But once we got almost halfway there, it became nighttime. Without my leaf to write on, I got an orange one and rewrote it before I drifted off...

I didn't dream that night.

The 76th Hunger Games: Event, Day 4

I woke Hazel and Nastasi, but we were found right at the edge of the arena. We were getting closer. I realized that the ground was rotating, like a treadmill. Walking backwards with the ground, we stood right in front of the force field. Hazel saw one panel of the force field that wasn't glowing like the others. She wanted to touch it. Nastasi and I said no, but Hazel did. She touched it. I closed my eyes and expected a giant boom.

.........but I didn't hear it.

Hazel was still touching the panel. She pushed on it, and it flipped over the surrounding panels to reveal a metal safe. In the safe was an ingredients list.

  • Nickel
  • Potassium
  • Krypton
  • Iodine
  • Silver
  • Copper

It looked like a recipe to melt down the walls. We decided to split up. What could happen, it was just us three. I decided to look for the nickel and potassium. Nastasi wanted to find the krypton and iodine. Hazel wanted the silver and copper.

Katniss's Perspective

I was walking in the forest with giant green caterpillars. One branch on a tree said, "--------(1,2) (2,1) (1,2) (2,1) ------>" I looked in the direction of the arrow, and I found one of the caterpillars. It looked fake. I looked at the bead-like things on its back. It was like a coordinate grid. A coordinate grid! Of course! I pressed the two buttons in order twice and the branch fell. Inside was a jar of nickel. I stuffed it inside of my bag.

Next: Potassium. By the riverside near the forest, there was a large stone. I lifted it up to find a lazer arrow. These arrows can leave a trail of light behind it that lasts for a minute at a time. On the other side of the river, trees were lined up with the reflective mirrors on them. On the ground, were six footprints, representing to stand there and to shoot. I tried the first one, and it flew past the trees. The second one hit a tree. The third one hit a mirror, and repeated until it fell in the water. I followed the lazer, and realized that it created an arrow. I followed the arrow, which the point was pointing at a tree. Seeing an axe carved in the tree, I chopped it down, and found the jar of potassium. I put that in my bag along with the nickel. I needed to show this to Hazel and Nastasi! Two out of six items, and there's only 16 hours left!

Nastasi's Perspective

Krypton and iodine. I wondered if Katniss and Hazel found their items yet. The timer in the sky only had 17 hours left. I guess the only things that matter now are: stay alive, find Ivo, save each other, and kill Coin. I don't want to kill anyone. But maybe I could learn from Katniss. She's won the Hunger Games twice. I want her to win three times. Hey, I just realized that Katniss never killed anyone in the 76th Hunger Games! Hazel killed a Career, and Katniss hasn't killed ONE person! I don't know what's up with her. I was her biggest fan ever since two years ago.

But where to find Krypton? I needed clues. Or helpers. I could hear Hazel cry out, "I found copper! Yes!" And nothing for me. I guess that I need to look closely at everything. Or at least just one thing.

I was very lucky that I found a fake frog as my lead. The frog's eyes looked like steel. Or...silver. Silver! As I looked closer, the frog was nothing more than a jar painted to look real. I put the silver in the jar to give to Hazel.

After finding the silver, I found a fake crow nearby. The crow's eyes looked just like the frog's eyes. Except they had little dark spots in the middle of them that got wider and shorter every second. Those weren't eyes! They were cameras! I ran off, and the crow screeched. Black crows...REAL black crows came swooping down from nowhere to attack me. I ran off behind a rock, but the crows weren't paying any attention to me. They went to sit on several branches. I watched them do nothing, until I got up in front of the camera. That's when I saw it. The crows on the branches were creating letters. I could read, "OCK." That was it. There should have been a first letter. I thought of 6 words ending in -ock. Dock, jock, lock, pock, rock, sock.

A nearby pine tree had an L carved into it. Lock. I stepped back, and fell into a ditch. A berry bush was beside the bush, and I recognized the berries. They were the nightlock berries that Hugh ate. It hit me. The dark leaves on the trees behind the crows looked like nighttime. Some golden leaves were meant to represent stars. It came so clear to me. Night-L-ock. Nightlock. I dug beneath the nightlock bush carefully, and found the jar of krypton...and iodine.

Hazel's Perspective

I was tossing curses back and forth in my head from what happened to Mizar. We were best friends every since the training. Then Ivo, if he's gone, then it's just girls vs. boys. Or in this case, girls vs. a freaking boy. Silver and copper. I decided to find copper first, since it looked like the least harmful. The copper was actually with me the entire time, little did I know.

I searched trees, bushes, caves, streams, but nothing. I took out my sword to cut down some trees, and the handle felt weird. The handle WAS the jar of copper! Why was it there? I couldn't help but screaming, "I found copper! Yes!" Not even Coin could hear me, and I felt happy.

The strange thing was that I couldn't find the silver anywhere. It wasn't with me either. So I picked up my stuff and ran towards the Cornucopia. I almost forgot about the wall. Katniss was already there, but Nastasi wasn't yet. We waited an hour until she finally came. What surprised me was that SHE was the one with the silver. The little insect, she was.

Katniss took all jars and mixed them all in one jar. The result was a dark grey color. Nastasi and I helped her pour it on the wall, and a hole was created in it. We stepped out and found Ivo by the Cornucopia. He was sleeping.

Katniss's Perspective

I'm so glad that I found Ivo. I rushed over to him to see if he was okay. I nudged him, but he didn't wake up. Nastasi and Hazel gasped. I didn't realize about something inside of his stomach. A knife. Ivo...was dead.

But this was not ordinary knife. There was something on it that gave who killed him away. The knife was camoflauged. Coin killed Ivo. With only 15 hours left, and with the sun descending, I sang a song to Nastasi before the fell asleep.

"I remember tears streaming down your face when I said, 'I'll never let you go.'

And all those shadows almost killed your light.

I remember you said, 'Don't leave me alone.'

But all that's dead and gone and past tonight.

Just close your eyes, the sun is going down.

You'll be alright, no one can hurt you now.

Come morning light, you and I'll be safe and sound."

Nastasi's eyes slowly closed as a tear streaked down her cheek. I looked at my death leaf. No one died in the past day, except for Ivo. He got 8th place, he died right before Jago was shot in the back. So that would mean that Paulo got 7th, Mizar got 6th, and Jessidy got 5th.

So that means it's just Nastasi, Hazel and I versus Coin. Tomorrow would be the final day of the 76th Hunger Games.

The 76th Hunger Games: Day 5

I woke up peacefully that morning. The mockingjays were singing "Safe and Sound", the song I sang to Nastasi last night. But something about that song makes me want to curl up in a ball and cry. Maybe it had to do with singing a song to Rue, and her mockingjay song.

That's when Nastasi and Hazel woke up. Nastasi hummed "Safe and Sound", and Hazel hummed "The Hanging Tree." "Morning," they both said. As we all looked up, the clock had only one hour left. We decided to dedicate that hour to getting ready for Coin's arrival. I searched the Cornucopia, and found many weapons. Nastasi and Hazel looked around the Cornucopia. They didn't have much luck, but quite a few tridents were laying around autumn.

Hazel and I were practicing spear throwing, but with sticks we picked up in spring. As I looked over at Nastasi, I saw she was painting pictures on the Cornucopia. Where did she get the paint? Was it berries? Leaves? Or sap? Hazel and I watched her paint the pictures for about 10 minutes, when I almost shed a tear. She was painting Hunger Games tributes.

I can't believe it. At 10, she watched me in the 74th Hunger Games! Her first few paintings were of the Careers. Cato and Marvel could not be told apart, but Clove and Glimmer's were easy, because of Clove's brown hair and Glimmer's golden braids.

Next, she painted Wiress and Beetee. In the painting, Wiress was painted in a red-like color. That may symbolize the blood rain. Mags and Finnick were next. Mags was being carried by showboat Finnick. Mags had a very transparent halo on, and clouds of white dust were painted around her. The clouds were the fog that killed her.

Johanna was next. Nastasi painted two pictures of Johanna: one in the arena with the black hair and red streak. The other one was her in the Capitol, without hair.

The final painting was of me. I was holding hands with Prim...

"Nastasi, this is beautiful," I couldn't help but say. Nastasi's mouth curled into a smile. "Thanks," she said. "My mother taught me how to paint." Then, she started to cry. "But...she's gone now." I wiped away her tears, and Hazel started to frown.

Hazel shivered and pointed at the wall. "Look!" she screamed. The a spot on the wall was turning orange. It started fizzing. And then dissolving. A person stepped through the hole.

Coin.

He walked up towards us, but was interrupted by the walls falling. He had gotten out just in time.

The walls fell on each season, so that anyone inside would be dead. Coin continued walking towards us. We shrieked a little when his walk turned into a run. We ran on the fallen walls over winter. He took out his sword, and was ready to throw it at me. But then the ground underneath the fallen walls started to slowly fall. Hazel, Nastasi and I ran away from Coin, but tried to get at the arena's center. The ground was at our legs now. I jumped, grabbed onto the edge, and grabbed Nastasi's hand. She started to breathe heavily, but as I reached out for Hazel, I couldn't find her hand anywhere. Hazel was falling with the ground. She looked up, and smiled. I started crying, and so did Nastasi. Hazel did a timid wave. Then, I couldn't see her in the abyss of darkness. The cannon sounded.

Hazel died. I couldn't believe it. She was a warrior! She should have won with me. I guess my only duty now is to protect Nastasi and kill Coin.

(From Nastasi's perspective) I guess my only duty now is to protect Katniss and kill Coin.

(Back to Katniss) Coin started throwing swords and knives at us. We dogded them and went to hide behind the Cornucopia. Several knives hit our arms, and blood rushed down and dripped off our fingertips. I told Nastasi to hide in the Cornucopia, but she said, "No."

I gave her a bow and arrow. She shot the bow almost perfectly! I gave her more bows and we were ready for Coin.

Coin walked up with a bow and arrow. He walked Nastasi backward until she hit the Cornucopia. "Katniss!" she screamed. Nastasi! I lost Gunnar. I lost Mizar. I lost Paulo. I lost Autumn. I lost Robby. I lost Hugh. I lost Hazel. I lost Bowen. And I lost Ivo. I couldn't lose Nastasi, too. I ran towards Coin, screaming.

Coin let his arrow go.

Nastasi...gone. I lost her.

I lost myself when I saw Nastasi drop down. She was still breathing, but barely. She held up her bow and arrow to kill me. But I realized that the bow and arrow meant to shoot at Coin. We both aimed and let go.

Coin was dead.

Nastasi took a deep breath, and wobbled to her feet. I was amazed at how strong and brave she was. We were the only two tributes left.

I screamed up to Panem, "There will not be one victor of the 76th Hunger Games! There will be two!" Nastasi chimed in, "Yeah! We would rather kill ourselves than kill each other! Put that in an arena and kill it!"

Nothing. Did they hear?

They did. "Congratulations to Nastasi Saltwood from District 11 and Katniss Everdeen from District 12! They are our victors for the 76th Hunger Games!"
