The Victors' Village is a wealthy neighborhood in every district where past victors of the Hunger Games reside. They contain at least twelve luxurious houses which are given to victors as rewards for surviving the Hunger Games. When the victor dies, everyone sharing the house with them must leave and move back to their assigned residence.[1]

Creation[]

The Victors' Village was the idea of Coriolanus Snow, created after the 10th Hunger Games. Accepted as an apprentice Gamemaker for future Games, he quickly began brainstorming ideas on how to get a better class of tributes to volunteer. One of his first suggestions was the creation of the Victors' Village, which would be the envy of everyone else living in the districts' hovels.[2]

In District 12, the Victors' Village was located about a half-mile walk from the town square. There were twelve houses, but nine of them stood empty, since only three victors lived there. The residences were arranged around "a beautiful green, dotted with flowering bushes", and the exteriors were attended to by at least one groundskeeper. The houses were so large that each could hold Katniss' old home ten times over.[1]

One of the empty houses had a glass window in the door that Katniss once broke to get inside, and through the kitchen, she was able to go downstairs into the cellar. Light came in through the window wells, and inside, it had a cement floor and stiff drop cloths lying around.[4] Since Katniss could navigate the unfamiliar house even in a panic, it's likely that each dwelling had a similar (if not identical) layout.

Katniss' house (Victors' Village)[]

After winning the 74th Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen moved here with her mother and her sister Primrose. The house gave off a warm glow of life, with smoke coming from the chimneys and light from the windows. For the Harvest Festival, they affixed colorful bundles of corn to their door.[1]

Downstairs, the Everdeens had a mat at the front door, and through the doorway into the kitchen,[1] they had a stove,[5] a long dining table,[6] a hearth, and matching rocking chairs.[7] There was a small bathroom a few steps off the kitchen,[5] and the Everdeens always left a window ajar in the pantry so their cat Buttercup could come and go.[8] There was also a hallway that led to the study,[1] which housed their telephone,[9] a polished wooden desk, and several carved, straight-backed chairs.[10] There was a big storage closet downstairs as well,[11] and their television presumably sat in the living room.[12]

Upstairs, the second floor bathroom had both a bathtub[13] and a shower.[9] In Katniss' bedroom, there was naturally a bed, along with a couple of windows,[7][5] a chair,[13] a closet,[9] and a dresser with a vase of flowers atop it.[8] The house also had a number of extra bedrooms.[6]

Haymitch's house[]

Haymitch Abernathy's house was across the green from Katniss', and despite the groundskeeper's efforts, it gave off "an air of abandonment of neglect". Inside, mouse droppings and garbage littered the floor, and over the years, it had accumulated a strong odor of liquor, vomit, boiled cabbage, and burned meat. In the kitchen, there was a table, a coal stove, and a sink.[1] Haymitch had also torn the telephone out of his wall years ago.[13] The conditions inside the house improved immensely when Katniss convinced Haymitch to hire Hazelle Hawthorne as a housekeeper.[9]

Peeta's house[]

After moving out of his family's bakery, Peeta Mellark lived three houses away from Katniss,[9] and he appeared to live alone. Like Katniss', his house regularly had smoke coming out the chimney and light from the windows, and it was decorated for the Harvest Festival.[1] He was known to sleep with his windows open.[14]

The war and beyond[]

The Victors' Village was left standing after the bombing of District 12. Katniss believed that it was left either as a warning, a message, or a place for Capitol officials to stay when they visited the district.[8] After the Second Rebellion ended, other people involved in rebuilding District 12 took up residence in several of the once-empty houses. When Peeta returned to District 12, he planted primroses in front of Katniss' house, in honor of her late sister.[5]
