- "Tick, tock"
|Portrayed by||Amanda Plummer|
Wiress was a female tribute from District 3. She competed in and won a previous, unspecified Hunger Games, (possibly the 56 to the 59th), and then participated again in the 75th Hunger Games. In the second set of Games, she was at first rejected by many to be an ally, except for Katniss Everdeen who wanted her as one. She later proved her worth when she revealed to her allies that the arena was shaped and operated like a clock by saying "Tick tock" repetitively until Katniss figured it out. Knowing this, Katniss and the others were able to predict the devastating obstacles the Gamemakers arranged. Wiress showed that she was always one step ahead of the others, but could only be understood by her loyal companion Beetee, and eventually Katniss. She was given the nickname "Nuts" by Johanna over the years since her victory.
75th Hunger Games
Wiress was the one who had pointed out the flaw in the invisible force fields in the Capitol. In the Chariot rides, she and her district partner, Beetee, wore electric bulb studded outfits. She gazed up at the field protecting the Gamemakers, and showed the square of shimmering air to Katniss, with Beetee to help her out. This fact that she gave to Katniss was essential to the victors' escape at the end of Catching Fire. Without this tidbit, Katniss would not have known to shoot her arrow into the chink of the force field, therefore destroying the dome shield surrounding the arena. She also helped Katniss figure out that the arena was designed as a clock by repeating "Tick, tock".
Wiress allied with Johanna Mason, Blight, and Beetee on the first day. The four were caught in the blood-rain in the arena and Blight was killed by running into the force field. It is assumed that this is what made Wiress mentally unstable. She seemed unable to say much except "tick, tock," which later proved to be valuable information concerning the arena's design. Johanna, Beetee, and Wiress then found Finnick Odair, Peeta Mellark, and Katniss and allied with them.
On Day 2 of the 75th Hunger Games, a large spool of wire was specifically placed in the arena by Plutarch Heavensbee so Beetee could destroy the force field surrounding the arena, and consequentially Katniss's alliance could leave the arena. After Katniss figures out the arena is a clock, Wiress goes to clean the wire in a stream for Beetee. While she cleaned, she sang a song that, if it stopped, would alert the others of danger. Katniss notices it stops and sees that Wiress' throat has been slit open by Gloss, the District 1 male tribute. After Wiress dies, Katniss just had the time to say goodbye, close her eyes, and retrieve the wire from her corpse.
Wiress was described to be shy by Katniss, who mentions that in the training room, she seldom completed her sentences, and Beetee had to finish them for her. When she, along with Johanna and Beetee, team up with Finnick, Katniss, and Peeta, she could only recite comments and songs about clocks - referring to the clock shaped arena. Beetee said that Wiress was not only smart, but intuitive. She was an intellectual genius, inventive, and clever.
In Catching Fire, Wiress and Beetee are both described as having ashen skin and black hair.
